A friend of mine just called me while on his way to Flagstaff to participate in 4th of July parade tomorrow with his 81 308. His smog pump belt just broke and he is wondering if he should continue on with his plans for the parade. Can anything bad happen driving without the pump operational?

i would imagine that the air pumps have to help with high exhaust temps and keeping the cats from becoming nuclear.

I ran mine for a week while a replacement was ordered.
My understanding is the tips in the exhaust will not be happy and should be removed with the threads capped for long term disconnection. But for such a short term thing as a parade? I wouldn't suspect any issues.

Ditto -- no problem for a day or two with the air pump belt off (and easy use). Actually the cats will run a little cooler and more inefficiently than normal because there won't be any extra oxygen present to react with the HC/CO coming out of the engine. Long-term, this would be bad for the cats and might result in permanent fouling (and damage to the air injection nozzles that Clyde mentioned).

Well he owns a Ferrari. Damage to the wallet is a given.

Oh, and make sure he gets a picture taken of the home coming queen perched in his car. And post it :)
