Greetings all First Post! Way too long a reader of this wonderful Forum. Present owner of Chassis # 22345 since 1981. Registered in CA. since 1977. North American Version. just under 37K miles. I NEED INFO ABOUT HISTORIC PLATES IN CALIF. At this point of my GTB's life I'am only driving a couple hundred miles or so per yr. Never a every day driver by any means. I could live with the limited use that Historic plates require and State farm also offers collectors insurance to comply with the DMV 's requirement for collectors insurance to match historic plates ect ect. My GTB was due for Smog last Dec. 07, when suddenly my smog guy, same one that always done my all my most difficult jubs left the automotive industry alltogether. My heart was almost broken right then and there cause I knew what a battle I was facing every two yrs here. So I began to research the Historic plates route as some of you have already done. One question arises and I cannot find any ref material from DMV BAR CHP concerning smog requirements for Historical plates. I spend two days online, asked a CHP officer, even went into the DMV office , no one I talked with had any knowledge what so ever. Can someone direct me in the right direction? Do I need to Smog before asking the state to issue plates. Do I need to smog every two yrs after that? Need to know where the rules are writen. And lastly have some of you Historic Plate holders had a simular situation? Just cannot find a great deal of info.Did the download for the three DMV code sections Historic cars are reqd. to have, but to ref. to smog requirements, weird, no? Please help a GTB owner keep her here in calif. Thanks John

My smog guy told me last year when smogging my 77 Fiat that it was the last time I would do it because it was 30 years old.

He said once a car gets to 30 years old it became exempt from smog checks.

    Good luck.

I believe, and others have posted that the governator killed the 30 year, rolling exemption.

My hope is that the state doesn't toughen the requirements/testing. Currently, the bi-annual smog cert is only required in major air quality controll basins. Up here in Humbug county, (250 miles north of SF), we are only required to smog on purchase.

Tell us a bit more about the "restrictions/requirements" for historic plates.

    Thanks,
    chris

I went to the DMV in San Francisco and applied for a historic plate for my other Italian car. Cars of 25 years or older are eligible, just filled out a form and pay the $25 fee. The restrictions are that the car has to be used in parade, car shows and club events. I received a 3 month temporary license and the historic plate has to be special made and will mail to me within 3 months.

Regarding smog, only cars of 75 or older are exempt from smog in San Francisco perhaps the entire Bay Area. It is nice to know outside of the Bay Area are different.

Thanks for your response. My question concerns the smogging. Did you have to smog your 308 prior to doing the request for Historical Plates? Or was your last smog less than 90 days old. How about future Smogs? Do Historical plates still require car to be smogged every two yrs? These are the two most important questions I need to find the answers for. If you got to smog it prior to Historical plates, and what hapens after that in regards to future smogs? I need to locate the written laws in attempt to clear-up some confusion. Please other 308 owners that have recd. Historical Plates Where can I locate the Smog requirements to start doing the research, that I may share with others that wish to do the same in the future. Cheers JMN

    Welcome!

I hope you get it sorted out, you are on the right track regards to insurance although State Farm put mine on Collector coverage without my having historic plates (Texas one have a FORD on it!) :D

I think you re getting the linkage between plate registration and the safety inspection (smog test) confused, here they are two different items.

I maintain insurance and tag registration on cars I do not even use, but if they are on the road they need the safety inspection.
I think they are telling you correctly that your 1977 will still need to pass......if you need parts for the pumps I have them.

    Some info from Israel:

Cars older than 1974 are not taking the smog test (not so severe for cars up to 1995 - 4% max CO), but you are not allowed to drive collection cars (30 years old) between 7-9 AM (so you will not use it for your work). The insurance and the tests fee (twice a year) are very low cost for these vehicles.
