Replacing the clock in a 308 QV

I don't recall the location in a qv, but the clock is retained (typically) by a bracket and thumb screw from behind. Once you remove that, the clock will come out through the front.

How did you "take the clock apart" without removing it first? Did you try removing the bezel from the front? Yikes!

Send it to palo alto speedometer, or the speedometer shop of your choice, it can be repaired. Check for a new one, it it can be had for $150 or less, do that, cause that is what it will likely cost to fix yours. BTW, it is a good idea to install a 1.5 amp inline fuse behind the clock to prevent this in the future. Just use spade connectors on the inline fuse, so it plugs right into the back of the clock, between the power to it. I did it on 308 and 328 and it will protect you from exactly this type of accident. It was a tip I saw on another site.

 

Did you check the fuse?

 

If you have a qv, you only have to remove the two screws holding the oil and clock. disconnect the wires adn twist the bezel of the clock to take it apart. the lens is plastic so besure you dont scratch it.
It's not hard, but time consuming. I think its the two screws that hold the whole assembly in place.

I removed mine years ago, and it was a Bit&* to put back together... best of luck!

The clock is mounted on a removable panel. Look for 2 tiny screws, 1 in each lower corner of the panel.

Remove the screws and pull the panel out with the gauge and clock attached . Time involved, about 3 minutes.

 

Before you get too deep in assumptions, check for the voltage at the clock.

 

you can pull from the gauges... and or take a tiny screwdriver wrapped in a chamois and pry it out. if its been in there a while it will be tight... also you can use Leatherique rejuvinator oil to help loosen the leather... when I took mine out it was crusted with dirt and grit from the years...

 

Getting the clock out was a breeze, but I could not twist the bezel to get the "glass" out. I think it's actually plastic and it's all scratched up (all the rest of the guages look like real glass and like new). Since it's not technically *my* clock (it's a friend's car), I don't want to really foul it up. Are there any pics or online procedures to help with this?

You have to carefully pry the bezel off. Use a jewelers small flat head screwdriver and bend the tip at a 90. Take your time and all will go well.

The lens is plastic because of the of the hole drilled in it for the time set wheel; glass is too hard to drill, so they took the easy way out.

Check with a glass company to see if they can replicate the lens. If not, get a piece of plexiglas the same thickness and make a new one.

 

It is indeed plastic, mainly because of the hole for the adjuster. You can have a new piece of thin plastic cut at a glass shop or some such. The bezel comes off, only with some very delicate and careful prying of it from the back. I did not wish to risk dinging the metal bezel, so I sent mine to Palo Alto Speedometer....this was several years ago. The fixed it right up, installed a new plastic face and all was well.

 

If I can pry off the bezel, I might try to have it replicated in glass. PAS is not an option because the last time I tried to deal with them, their service was, shall we say, "less than optimal" (I'm trying to be polite here). Even if they did this job for me for FREE, I'm not sure they'd win me back.... But I digress.

I think the real b#tch is going to be getting the "panel" out and more importantly back in as I have seen pictures through the years now of them being all jacked up...

The other gauges ARE real glass.

You cannot drill glass (or they didn't anyway) for the stem, so the clocks have a plastic lens.

A clock on eBay for $20???............no I don't think so.

** In my QV, there are two screws that hold the clock panel in place, once the screws are removed, gently pry out the clock panel. You can see what it looks like from the back, in my photo, the two nuts that hold the clock to the panel are marked in yellow.
My clock worked but the lens was cloudy, so I took it in to a local clock repairman and he changed it .
You might try putting a voltmeter across the two clock wires and verify 12v, BEFORE sending in the clock for repair.

I had to unbolt the entire center console and come up through the bottom with the help of Mesoscale in order to pop that piece out. OF COURSE just unscrewing the two screws wouldn't do it...................that would be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to easy.

Clock on it's way to GA to Nick to be refreshed...
