XJ stands for experimental Jaguar. The Series 1 broke new ground for its time and they were no sluggards. Hell, my carb'ed Series 2 was faster, rode nicer, and has more looks/chrisma than my current XJ6, but didn't handle as well and wasn't as reliable. I miss that car.. too poor to buy it back from the current owners, though they've offered. They even call me its rightful owner, LOL.

not to be a total snob, but jaguar xk-e's are not in the same class as the
    aston martin db6.
jaguars were originally sold on VALUE FOR MONEY!
    aston martins have always been the epitome of british luxury motoring;
it's contemporaries were the (british) bristol, (french) facel vega and spanish
hispano suiza.unlike cadillac, who used to be rivals with bentley and rolls;but
    are now rivals with TOYOTA.hahah.sorry.
here's a little british "class" system.(1st being lowest)
    1.rover/austin/vauxhall
    2.morris garage(mg)/tvr
    3.jaguar
    4.aston/bentley/rolls royce/bristol

the db9 may be pretty(but totally predictable in terms of design),but it's no
new-age xk-e. the e-type was amazing coz it was gorgeous, fast, handled well
    but CHEAP.what is the NEW e-type?probably the AMv8 2006.
    relatively cheap,good-looking and fun.
the chance of a xk-e type car reappearing is virtually nil.what it would be
today is a $55k,great handling and superb looking coupe with CLASS and
    timeless design.

hippo, you contradicted yourself. Yes, Aston Martin's have more grace and prestige than a Jaguar. And you are correct that the E-Type (there is no such thing as the XKE, a silly North American slang and unofficial designation) isn't in the league as the DB6. Its one better.

You musn't forget performance. The new E-Type must also be a performance leader in its class in addition to the rest. When you're buying an Aston Martin, you're buying the badge and the craftsmanship. Its underpinnings are Jaguar. Get used to it.

i didnt know that "xk-e" was an american slang word for the excellent e-type.
i thought that was what they were called in america, sorta like the audi 100cd was called the audi5000!
i do not think i contradicted myself, sunny. yes,the much panned (by aston
loyalists) db7 did indeed use jaguar xk/xjr underpinnings, but to my knowledge
this was the only aston to EVER use someone (jaguar) else's underpinnings.
u see, that's what seperates astons from jaguars;almost the entire package
of all astons bar the db7 have been made by hand.
when the db7 debuted in the mid 90s,aston fans were both excited and downtrodden in equal measures.excited that an all-new aston,a continuation of the superb DB series at that;was to be launched.what a beauty it was too!
the fact that it was based on the jag xk8 did not go down well.the fact that the xk-r annihalated the db7 was too much!
ford tried to save the db7 with the much improved db7 v12 vantage, and to a certain degree did.
IMHO,ford has somewhat diluted the wonderful aston heritage.although the db9,amv8 and vanquish use PURPOSE-BUILT floorpans and chassis, engines are now made in germany and bodies are now only 30-40% hand-assembled.
how the aston boys must miss VICTOR GAUNTLETT.

This thread is too old..but As Jaguar E-type´s enthusiast I want to tell you something.
It is sad that E-type seems to be forgotten.
Almost nobody at my age does not know what E-type is ( I´m teenager )
Aston Martin DB6 was much more expensive than Jaguar E-type at that time.
    But check www.classicdriver.com, please!!!!!!
Some E-types are over 100,000 euros worth.
Most DB6´s are 40,000euro more expensive.
40,000euro is big money..but the difference between the developments of these two car´s prices says everything.
Jaguar E-type was, is and will be one of the most popular cars.
it is just unbelievable that E-type got an enormous development of its price.
IfDB6 had been as popular as E-type. It would have cost more than the current price.
But we see by analysing the prices that DB6 is less popular.
the beauty and greatness are always in the eye of the beholder.
But name me some magazines, which do not add E-type as greatest cars of all time

Automobile named E-type as one of 25 greatest cars of all time
Evo named E-type as the second sexiest car of all time
Daily Paragraph honored E-type as the sexiest car of all time.
Sportcar international ranked E-type as the third of ten greatest sportcar of all time etc..

Some may not be interested in what many magazines tell them.
But it shows that Jaguar E-type is not forgotable.

    And one thing to add:

It must not be a supercar to be the legend.

The E Type looked like nothing else.

The DB9 looks like a DBS looks like an AM V8 looks like a DB9 etc...

E type is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

I love the current AMs, but truly, they all look the same. There aren't many cars out now that I would consider beautiful and timeless.

I am not sure they really compare that well...the most sought after E-Types are the series 1 inline 6 soft top

...yes it was not a very reliable car...had cooling and electrical problems and it never really did 150mph. I have a DB9 and...I will say it is near as beautiful as an E-type...but it has been pretty reliable and I imagine it performs as pretty much as they claim...although every time you put your foot into it you get some kind of new warning light that always tells you to drive really slow...last time it was something with the exhaust...

i do not agree completely.. i think each DB car will be lengendary to a certain degree... All the DB cars from the 60s and 70s are legendary (to people who know them.) James Bond drove a DB5 and DB6 for the longest time. . . Aston Martin will always be a benchmark British car maker, despite who owns it now. Jaguar lost their touch in the 80s, by producing foul looking cars with zero performance and nothing but problems.

The E Type has no successor in my view because no new Jag is good enough to represent it. No new jab is a true performer (let alone 6MT) and now they have just become the cheap man's Bentley (and thats if you get a red label.)

If a company like Porsche bought Jaguar, then I think we would see many more respectable vehicles being launched, and even a proper E-type successor.

Malcolm, you have a beautiful black E-type there!
I like the removable hardtop on it. I haven't seen too many set up like that.

I like my Series II FHC car. Didn't cost me too much to buy or maintain and it is great fun to run around in.
I know "XKE" is an American slang name for the E-type but I couldn't resist getting the custom license plate for it ("XKE 4FUN)".

Thanks. The E-type is a fun car to cruise around in.
It gets lots of attention from young & old, male & female.
Here is my favorite pic of my disco-era British car.
