So your oil is at the end of it's life and you want to punish it by tracking the car? I would swap the oil, brake fluid and check the rotors and pads. A full check up will be required anyway.

I'd be surprised if that were true. I just watched that thing like 10 times in a row and the car is sliding sliding sliding then finally only when it's too late does the driver even seem to notice.

It has about 2 qts of new oil added, so I wouldn't say it's really at the end of it's life. These cars burn quite a bit of oil in the first 3K. I talked to my service people and mentioned I'd be pushing it hard. They said, "It's an R8, it's supposed to be pushed hard. You'll be fine."

It isn't true. From what the comments on the full length youtube video say, from the guy in the car, it was the drivers R8 and the Viper ahead of him was his as well. He was just pissed that he did that.

Wouldn't hurt to bring a torque wrench for the lug nuts (an R8 does use lug nuts, no?;)).

Also, +1 on the need to stay cool, in every way. Lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. And as difficult and counterintuitive as it may be, if the car starts to get loose, don't lift.

Best of luck, be safe and have fun.

Hmmm... go ahead and leave the track surface at an even HIGHER rate of speed...

Sorry, have read too much drivel about "braving it out", "you can save it" and "he just quit driving, never give up" after people walk away from a smoking heap.

Remember, there's no easier place to find free advice than the race track paddock... :)

    April 2001.

There was one hugh accident at that exact same spot where a yellow 360 from FoW went off doing that exact same thing. Driver didnt return to the series. Alot of drivers had problems starting at turn 3 or so all the way through the back around turn 9 maybe?

We were actually all quite amazed at that first accident on Thurs too. He was a top placed driver and in the series for many years. VIR seemed so safe when we did our first practice.

Ive got my April 2001 VIR footage at the 1 min mark here -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoOiwiEUt8c

Man, that black car in Montreal really did a number on the other one early on. I'd be pissed...

William, I posted the link to the R8-VIR clip for fun and have abandoned this thread, but not by design. I didn't mean to dampen your spirit. The R8 is one of my favourite road cars and VIR one of my favourite tracks.

I hope you have a successful track day. I've enjoyed the R8 on the track and hope you have as much fun as I did. It sounds like you've got a great attitude. Do your best to find the most qualified instructor. Often times at track days you get volunteer instructors who aren't well trained or the most qualified. Best of luck!

-Sorry, have read too much drivel about "braving it out"-

Yes, many of us have had the experience of losing the car while trying to save the corner. Not a great trade.

Peter, your post 7 says it all. Every car I've ever driven at VIR is perilously light right at the point of the poor guy's spin.

I wonder if catching the Viper was on the driver's mind? Getting a jump into the esses? Anyway, my heart goes out to him.
