Does this means no Alonso at Ferrari? http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/080722140333.shtml World champion Kimi Raikkonen is on the cusp of signing a new two-year extension to keep racing for Ferrari beyond the 2009 season, according to the widely circulated German newspaper Bild-Zeitung. It was being speculated that Raikkonen, the 28-year-old Finn, was growing weary of the Grand Prix world and - despite his contract for next year - might even have gone into early r etirement at the end of this season. His teammate Felipe Massa has two and a half years left to run on his own agreement with the Maranello-based team. If confirmed, the Raikkonen news would deal a blow to the hopes of double World Champion Fernando Alonso, who reportedly has a deal in place to race with Ferrari if a vacancy arises for 2009 or 2010. "It does look as though the Spaniard will have to stay with Renault," former triple World Champion Niki Lauda told the newspaper.
IF...IF...this is true then Ferrari cannot have considered Alonso seriously in any manner. They have publicly and at high level put to rest rumours of Alonso wearing red all season. I will believe it when I see it. So far the silly season isnt that silly... Mclaren - same drivers Ferrari - same BMW - same Red Bull - Webber and Vettel Renault - same for now Honda - maybe no change(Rubens?) Toyota - no change seen yet Toro - Bourdais and someone else? Force I - No word of change Williams - Nakajima out? Anyone else got more to add?
First of all it is Bild Zeitung. Second contracts in F1 aren't worth their paper. Massa could be sent packing to offer Alonso a seat. Anything is possible at this point. I'm still thinking: Follow the money and Santander will be sponsoring Ferrari. Nuff said.
that's a pretty big clue as to who is coming your way I am looking forward to Kimi and Alonso, the perfect pairing, one doesn't speak and the other talks too much but both are brilliant and if Ferrari doesn't win with these pair then the problem is the car
I think it would be more entertaining if he stayed at Renault. Imagine if they raised their game (as well as Honda) and we had 5 competetive teams, each with a top driver. Watching Kimi, Lewis, Fernando, Kubica and Button fight it out with comparable machinery would make for an awesome season.
Button and Kubica are top drivers? I think RK lacks skill and, Button is driving around collecting a pay cheque.
I could definitely get behind that roster. Has there been any recent speculation as to who might be buying STR?
+1 Think Senna and Prost at McLaren or Villeneuve and Pironi at Ferrari. However I think Alonso will outdrive Kimi: Kimi is already struggling against Massa.
My bad. I see it looked like I was equating those two with Lewis, Kimi and Alonso. I should have said good drivers who could mix it up with the big boys if they had solid cars (like Kubica has done this year).
Kimi's just lost motivation, he thinks what happened last year will happen again and it's even more a certainty because he's not 20 points behind .... yet you and I bagged him last year and he came good let's start on him before he gets any further behind
AFAIK there's funding from Red Bull until the end of 2009 but I have no idea what's going on as far as the sale.
So it makes sense to get rid of Kimi and keep Massa. Then Santander will pick up all of Alonso's paycheck and Ferari will drop the price of its new street cars by 50% because of the cost savings. And I will buy Force India t-shirts as Ferrari won't be worth following after this. You realize the examples you gave both led to disaster.
Didn't Luca D also state he did not want Kimi & Alonso on the same team? This was from two months ago... Ferrari closing door on Alonso? President Luca di Montezemolo claims Raikkonen-Alonso pairing not desirable. Speaking to Italys Gazzetta dello Sport, marque president Luca di Montezemolo appeared to play down the chances of pairing the two men who have captured the past three world titles between them. To line up a Raikkonen-Alonso double act would mean wanting to damage yourself, he said, alluding to the acrimonious situation in which Alonso found himself after being challenged on track by rookie Lewis Hamilton in 2007, I want two equal drivers that work together.
I'm going on record and saying Kimi and Fonzi would not be a good pair. It's up to Ferrari to decide, but I don't think they would be a good match.
Ferrari have one bad race, or he gets outqualified by Kimi, and he'll be throwing his helmet, whacking the door off the hinges, etc. Alonso is not a a good recipe for Ferrari.
Alonso's attitude and behavior may be extreme, but he isn't a primary school teacher. Its ok for him to chuck hissy fits, it just shows how much he cares. I found all of Alonso's antics at Mclaren hilarious.
actually Brian, that is good because it shows the man is passionate and WANTS to win .... but I think he will need to temper his passion and work WITH the team and he would get what he wants or he could end up like Surtees and leave the team mid-season, either way I think it would be interesting with Kimi as the anti-thesis of Fred ... does Fred drink ?
i agree with both of you, but my point actually was, i think Fred will destroy Ferrari as a team. don't get me wrong still, deep down, i think he's the most complete driver out there since MS retired. give him a car like this year's Renault, and watch him go, still 100% commited. however, i think if Fred comes to Ferrari, he might cause disharmony within the team, especially if he gets beaten by his teammate.
Senna and Prost led to many championship titles. Pironi and Villeneuve at least to a constructors title for Ferrari. I just read a bio on Villeneuve and the situation of 82 was more complex than what it seemed from the outside. It wasn't just Pironi in San Marino. Believer is too strong a word. I'm more of a hoper, if that noun exists.
