    i believe this is an '87. when bought the interior was gutted with the all the cables either cut or seized. is there any other way to get the engine cover open without cutting or drilling anything?

    PS: i'm new to these cars so please excuse me if i used the wrong terms

    There is a backup pull cord. You may have to check behind the seat.

    there are no seats so i very easily found that. when i tried pulling it nothing happened. it wouldn't move at all and i pulled pretty hard

    Dear Ferraristi,

    Welcome to the Fchat...come join us in the TR forum.

    For the backup cord, you have to pull very hard. You are trying to open two latches and you don't have the leverage of a pull handle. If that still doesn't work your job will be harder.

    The pull cord runs down the driver side of the engine bay to the driver side latch. It runs at the edge of the rear quarter where the engine cover meets the panel. Ok, if you have to get it open without ruining anything you will have to go from underneath the car. First if you look down the engine grill at the corner edge, you will see the latch. If you go underneath, snake your arm up with a hook of some sorts. You want to try and hook the cable coming off the latch. If you pull down, the cable inside the sheath may pull tight enough to click open the latch.

    Option 2

    Remove the rear grill over the tail lights. Take off the 2 screws and slip off the slated grill from the center horse by pulling sideways. You will have to tear the grill mesh in front of the muffler and snake your hand to the latch. Again, pull the cable just off the latch and that might be just enough to click it open.


    Option 3

    Remove the rear valence cover off the muffler. This would give you enough room to snake your hand up and pull the cable just off the latch.
