Hi All, I'm about to rebuild my front ATE calipers on a 308GT4. The capliper pistons have a cutout to stop squealing brakes. I have had a look at my old Alfetta (same ATE brakes) manual which shows that the cutout/step should be positioned at 20 degrees to the pads so as to face towards the disk approaching the caliper (foward direction of disk). The alfa and porsche ATE's are mounted on the forward edge of the disk but the 308 has them mounted on the trailing edge of the disk. Am I right in assuming that if the cutout/step in the piston is facing the the opposite to the direction of travel of the disk that I wont get squealing? Sorry, this is a hard subject to describe without diagrams. Regards Brook308
I seem to remember a Volvo (ATE also) repair manual years back showed a tool that fit between the caliper and rotor to rotate and align the cutout in the piston. I recall that basically the low spot was positioned so the rotor met that portion first. They supply a shim for current cars that are cut out to the same effect for cars with uniform piston surfaces. These would suggest how to align the pistons. I can try to dig up the info if you wish. Cheers, Tom B
Thanks Tom, That's my belief too, I think as long as the step down is facing the direct on the oncomming rotor then you shouldn't have noisy brakes.
Hi George hows the car going?I asked the same question once and did a google search and found the answer. Here it is.Although this is for Porsche 911,the principal is the same http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_caliper_rebuild/911_caliper_rebuild.htm
Hi Maurice, Thanks for asking, the GT4 is going well other than a seized ATE caliper. I noticed in your profile you had a Merak once, what was that like? The Merak has an amazing shape but I opted for the GT4 for it's simplicity. If only the Merak had the GT4's mechanicals. The other minus for the Merak was the spare mounted in the engine bay and the dash. See U George
My brother still owns the Merak. We bought it together and he decided to keep it.Unfortunately it wasn't the best decision. He has rebuilt the engine and steering. The main problem with those cars is the brake and clutch hydraulic system.Nothing but headaches but the car is more or less sorted now
