Rod, Rod Serling, is that you? Anyway. No conspiracy. He went down in the forest, which can make it impossible to see by air. In the mid 80's, a Super Cub (similar to the plane Fossett was flying; fabric covered scaffolding) went missing for almost a year. His plane was found not far off of a road by a passing motorist.
No matter how experienced the pilot or how 'simple' the aircraft, flying is inherently dangerous. I think Chuck Yeager said it best: flying is not like hopping into your car to run down to the local 7-11 and pick up milk. When we begin to think of it that way -- too casusally -- even the most experienced pilots are setting themselves up for disaster. Thus even guys like Fossett (and maybe especially guys like Fossett, who have far more time and experience than most pilots) get themselves into serious trouble if they take things casually. As the saying goes flying is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect - no matter how experienced or good the pilot is.
This makes so much more sense than Roswell or Area 51, doesn't it? IIRC, one of the famous WW2 German aces (Max Baer?) was lost in the demonstration of a "safe recreational private plane" in a completely incomprehensible accident in the 1950s. I did not want to say it until the family and the FAA had spoken, but probably it is quite safe to say that he is not only lost, but that it may well be many years (if ever) before anything about it is found. Too bad, James
I hear what you're saying but, they had the best equipment known to mankind to track and find this guy. NORAD, tons of man hours and probably spent millions in search and rescue and nothing. They claimed he always wore his beacon, Breitling watch and now they say he wasn't wearing it that day. No flight plan and his planes ELT just happened to not work. Sorry, but I think all this "perfect storm" of Steve Fossett calamity, spells cover up. The only thing that I'm pretty sure of is that he has disappeared for good.
Radar coverage up there isn't very good. It wasn't designed to deal with VFR traffic, but to work the IFR traffic which flies at a much higher altitude. My instructor was his pilot when they had a Falcon 20. Couldn't deal with the wife, got fired. Great job, full use of the house in Carmel, 456 Ferrari, and a good check, plus got to fly great planes. Too bad he couldn't keep his mouth shut around the wife. Terrible about Fossett, but a single engine plane over hostile terrain, poses a substantial risk. Art
According to the insurance groups flying a light aircraft carries the same risk as riding a motorcycle on the street. Think Fossett was a better pilot than Scott Crossfield? Anybody can make a mistake...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Crossfield Flying is the one thing you will do that has no "bunny hill"...
Now they get to divvy up the dough. LoVallo said Mrs. Fossett would like to recover the remains "and really find out what happened." I'd be curious if life insurance pays up on something like this or do they get out of it on some "technicality"?
i met him a few times (we are in the same business), he was a total stud, i hope to be like him at his age (minus the bad part).
Good question. We all know how crazy the insurance companies can get. I doubt they have made the payout yet. They are probably still waiting for his remains to be found. Who knows, the insurance company could argue that he was abducted by aliens, fell to the centre of the earth, or flew away on an intergalactic asteroid for all they care........they won't pay until there is solid proof of his death.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2462912/Adventurer-Steve-Fossett-may-have-faked-his-own-death.html Interesting, I don't believe it though.
I love this stuff, one forumn said that he found the fourth dimension. And he is living with Reptoids
"Fossett's disappearance sparked the biggest search in American history, with the Civil Air Patrol's Black Hawks, fitted with infra-red technology, joined by over 30 private planes and internet experts scanning the Nevada desert looking for clues." "What I am interested in is the truth - and a proper criminal investigation of this man's disappearance was never undertaken by law enforcement or officials in the state of Nevada." This guy did not crash his plane into the mountains like the mainstream media would have you believe. If he did where is it? He was either blown to bits by F-18's or is somewhere incognito. Someone in government knows what happened to him. The truth probably will never surface.
Excuse me for saying this, but of course ! it happened in Nevada !! If I were him I'd hide out on Necker Island too...
With Jimmy Hoffa, Hitler, Ron Hubbard, and the missing American-girl from Aruba (Natalie Holloway?). . .
He is probably on an island where these big orange balls chase you down and make you return if you try to escape. Okay, I am probably showing my age with that one.
