Let's wait for v-spec GTR then sync the vids :)

This comparison would be more fair is you put Z06 against GTR.

At first I really thought this was just a continuation of the last thread, but that was an awesome video and really was worth it. Thanks. Is Garage419 your creation?

Put a professional driver in the ZR1 like the one in the GT-R and see how much faster the ZR1 will be. The ZR1 piloted around the Ring was driven by one of GM's engineers, not a pro driver, you can tell from his short shifting (Especially at the beginning), leaving it in too high a gear when exiting some corners and the sometime lack of rev match down shifting. All in all pretty pitiful driving for a company going for the "official lap". Plus he was taking some of those corners entirely too fast and nearly lost it multiple times.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But it seemed like the GT-R completed a single lap first? The time stamp stopped at 7:29

And the ZR1...was about four seconds behind?

the videos started and ended at different places, making it difficult to sync them exactly. also, if you notice, the timers on the individual cars run at different speeds.

Don't be confused by the title "engineer". When I was out at Miller Motorsports park with the Shelby KR, the fastest driver they had out there was the SVT Chassis Engineer. He knew the car inside and out, and could do amazing things with it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same with the ZR1

True, but short shifting constantly, holding it in too high of a gear exiting corners and generally going too fast around some corners isn't secret things you want to be doing. Alls I'm saying is there's a lot of room for improvement on the ZR1's "Official" Lap Time.

... Chiming in from the other thread :D ;)

Seems a more accurate comparison is ZR1, Koenigsegg CCX, Zonda, CGT for the car that lapped @ 7:29's power to weight ratio...

You're talking about racing in a straight line. What's the point of that again? Racing has left AND right turns.

Keep in mind the ZR1 beat the GTR at the 'ring, not the Z06. The Z06 lost to the GTR as well at the ring, at 7:42.99, so the Top Gear time isn't terribly surprising.

Its both, you bring it to the ring then to make sure the numbers are correct, you let the stig drive the hell out of the car.

The real measure of a cars performance is comparing which one wins when guys like us are running against each other no matter where the venue. I dont care which one John Force rips down the drag strip faster, or which one Schumi drives .2 tenths of a second faster at whatever track they are using that day.

Now the "REAL" measure of a car is the size of the smile on the drivers face... Those who have driven a Ford GT know what I am talking about :)

his is what Horst von Saurma from SportAuto had to say............

"With all the electronic aids the handling is absolutely perfect, the driver doens´t feel how the drive-by-wire system really works as the GT-R stay on track like on rails, always has grip, doesn´t lose control, higly computerized and a perfect racer for the street. A time less than 7:40 is pretty much optimistic, 7:50 shows the true potential of the car.

    C&D @ Williow:

    Z06-201.7
    GTR-201.1

R&T @ Willow with Millen driving:
Note that Steve Millen was a previous Nissan test driver and racer as well as owning a Nissan specialty performance shop. Steve has just recently reestablished himself as a Nissan factory driver.

    Z06-2.02.2
    GTR-156.9

Are we to believe that Millen, Nisan driver, can go 4.2 seconds faster than C&D but goes about a second slower in a Z06? That he can get roughly 19% better time out of the GTR but can't get a better time out of the Z06 and even gets a worse time?

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Motor Trend claims Nissan GT-R making at least 507 HP

Motor Trend questioned the numbers too, and decided to check for themselves when they received a GT-R to review. They took the GT-R over to K&N Engineering in San Bernardino, CA, who strapped it to their in-house chassis dyno to see just how much horsepower the car was making. Three separate runs in fourth gear netted an average of about 430 horsepower at the wheels. Assuming a conservative 15% drivetrain loss, the GT-R is actually producing more than 500 horsepower and 500 lb-ft torque at the flywheel.

Even with their claimed 10% loss, the math does not add up.

The R&T editors discuss the provenance of the GTRs used in testing. Nissan provided 3 GTRs for testing to the automotive press. A white, a silver, and a Black one. The black one was damaged somehow and was kept in reserve for parts. All three cars are US spec, but are definitely pre-production, and are classified as "engineering test cars", which is the only way they are legal for registration and operation on US roads. Once their lifecycle is done (90 days), they go to the crusher. This explains the caveats by C&D, and MT regarding the performance, and the extraordinary dyno result produced by the silver car.

That SAME silver car, with Michigan plates, is the one now competing in the One Lap. It is therefore NOT a production car, and if the dyno is any indication, is making a lot more power than the production car's certified 480. The R&T editor also said that this car is causing a major ruckus in the auto press and that some mags are rethinking their testing procedures with respect to manufacturer-supplied vehicles. Automobile reportedly declined to test the Nissan at this time because the cars supplied were not production cars. Expect that trend to be followed by others henceforward, he said.

I am a little late to the party here, but I thought I would clear up some of the misinformation in this thread. I drove a C6 Z06 in One Lap of America (#20) and I can tell you the following:

    1. The Nissan GTR was stock, running on Michelin PS2's and driven by Tony Swan, of Car and Driver Magazine. He has many years of track experience. He finished 7th in class, behind cars that were mostly putting down 600 HP at the wheels.

    2. My C6Z was stock, except for Pfadt coil overs and sway bars, and was running Goodyear runflats. I have two years track experience. I was able to beat the GTR in a few of the 17 events: low ET drag race, VIR South Course, VIR North Course, VIR Full Course and the dry skid pad. (VIR is home track for me.) I came in 12th in class.

    3. The other C6Z was completely stock and running Michelin PS2's. It was driven by a very capable driver, but with not nearly the experience of Tony Swan. The other C6Z bested the GTR in two events at Mid America, where the driver had considerable experience. He came in 11th in class.

    4. All of the track events are from a standing start, so the average of the three laps is much slower than the fastest two laps. For example, my second and third laps on the VIR full course were 2:11's. The first lap was 2:26.

    5. Road America was configured to run a chicane at turn 11 ("The Kink") that was significantly slower than the normal configuration.

Based on the results, my conclusion is the GTR is one heck of a track car, but could have been beaten (but not by much) by a C6Z driven by a Tony Swan clone

    Mid America-# 25 & 16 beats GTR.

The GTR doesn't even beat the Z06 (proven on streetfire.net) so comparing it to the ZR1 is not even fair. The GTR is a fast car, no doubt about it. But I think it's overrated.

A guy in Buffalo recently picked up his GT-R the same day it arrived at the dealership last Thursday (see video link), and drove it till about 4 am... He says it's the fastest car he's ever been in. If I had a choice, ZR1 or GT-R, the GT-R by a mile... just because Corvettes are not that good looking to me, and as an investment it's terrible. The GT-R is an all weather car, I like the AWD but anyone can get a Corvette ZR1... GT-R is a different story and to me, much better looking.

Matt, how about an entire G419 episode dedicated to settling the score between the ZR1 and the GTR?
