New to Fchat! Went to look and drive 1982 Ferrari 308 GTB over the weekend. Advertised as a handyman special. The car had been repainted and had minor typical rust at bottom of doors, paint shined nice. Interior worn but leather was not ripped, decent carpets, seemed to run o.k., but then I am not an expert. Mercedes dealer claimed the 36,000 service had been done. He said he would take $23,000 but if it did not sell he had wholesalers who were willing to give him that price. Looking to get into a decent car for relatively little money but do not want to run into big money issues later on. This is his second listing and has lowered the Buy It Now $1,000 from his previous listing. Any advice or information anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Ebay Item #350088362498. Sorry computer problem with posting Ebay Site. Thanks.

An '82 308 with rust for $23,000? Run, don't walk, away. You're far better off paying in the $30's for a good example. A wholesaler would part it out I bet, and also pay much less than $23K.

I don't know what your money situation is, but I think that you should hold out for a Quattrovalvole instead. '84 onward and you have less of the rust issues due to the zinc coatings. As for $23K--I personally have seen a few of the injected non-QV cars going for less and, at the same time, claiming no rust; so I'm not sure that this is the steal of the century. Others may add their two cents here too. Having a recent cam belt service done is a $2,000 bonus if you trust the salesperson.

Anytime any seller tells you he/she has someone else who will pay them what they want if you don't buy it, say "Thank you very much," and walk away. It' is the oldest sales ploy in the book.

If you are serious about car, then have Tim Stanford do a PPI. He knows these cars inside-out and can give you a honest evaluation of the car. If you don't buy it, then you loose the cost of the inspection, but $500 is a small price to pay to avoid a money pit. You can also look at the PPI cost as a learning experience, because you will learn everything about that car and many things about 308's that you didn't know before which will help you immensely when looking at other cars. He is right in Fort Lauderdale, number is: 954-764-7824. Good luck.

The rust on the bottom of the doors, around 4K plus to fix to do it right, plus belts, hoses, trx tires at 400 a pop and whatever else. You will have well over 30k. Do not run Fly!!!!

Tell them $15,000 and you'll consider it:)

And ask them to show proof of service.

I have to disagree with some of the comments made. You will find there is a lot of bias here on Fchat with regard to the 2v cars. Just my opinion. As suggested on here, get a PPI done by a real Ferrari guy not some mechanic at a Mercedes dealership. He will be able to tell you if the rust is major, if the service was done right and other things only an Fchat guy or Ferrari mechanic would know. You can use the money spent on the PPI for negotiating the final price if the car turns out to be worth the investment.

I just want to pass on the best Ferrari advice I have ever recieved. "If you can't afford a good Ferrari- you certainly can't afford a bad one." Run away from this car now- far and fast

That car doesn't look that bad...and it's a GTB. I say a few dollars on interior, fix the lower door panels and drive it like stink!
[and lower door skins should not cost 4K...fixing the paint maybe]

Then read my next post ;)

How would a PPI tell you if the service was done "right" ?

If you can't work on these and have little mechanical knowledge you will regret it down the road...drive it and if it feels right then get it inspected but keep in mind anything can happen...even after a good inspection.

Tim Stanford! He'll let you know what the car needs and probably what it is worth. He is fair and a nice guy and right around the corner.

there is a black beater 308 gtb 2v injected in atlanta for sale for $16,000 obo. i think that would be a better gamble than this car for $23k.

It was on collectorcartrader.com sometime last week. It doesn't appear to be there anymore. The ad was brief with only 1 picture. The ad stated that it didn't run. It might have also had water damage. The picture looked like it was being stored a some storage facility. The location was listed as Norcross GA.

Hey guys thanks for all the great advice. Apparently it was relisted for a day or so and then taken off because he claims he recieved his $23,000.00 asking price he quoted me. The potential buyer probably did me a favor if the deal sticks!! Anyway while I was doing my research I noticed another Ferrari in Boca Raton area I may be able to go check out. Ad is on Ebay for International Auto Group in Boca Raton. 1978 308 GTS, picture of tag in car says 1977, seats look like the are from a 1980 or newer if I am not mistaken? Any know anything about this car or International Auto Group? What happens to so called advertised investment value Ferrari 308 when aftermarket wheels, different seats, etc. are installed. Thanks for your help you guys are great. Tony.

I'll wager most 308s from Florida or other humid climates have rust issues in the doors. That's why door re-skin material is so plentiful in the parts market.

First year for GTS was 78. Seats are from 80 or newer. No spare wheel. Would need stock 14" wheels. Missing center AC vent. Early production GTS. Investment value means you need to "invest" about $2-$3K more to get it back stock.

Tony, right here on Ferrariads.com there are a couple nice looking 308's. Not sure if they are still available, but worth calling on for sure!

Hi guys! Just to update you on the 308GTB at Mercedes Benz of Ft. Lauderdale. I emailed them yesterday just as a followup to thank them for meeting with me last Saturday to look at the car and told them I had noticed that the car was relisted and apparently bought at $23,000.00. The gentleman emailed me back and said he had recieved a bogus phone number and email address? He will relist it later today. Do you guys feel he would be open to much lower offers than what he is asking since he is having such a tough time selling it? Worth a try or not? An offer in the high teens maybe? Thanks again, Tony.
