While I have never owned a Ferrari F1 floppy paddle car, I do now own an e60 M5 with SMG which I have come to hate. After owning an e34 M5, e36 M3 and e39 M5 all with a foot clutch as daily drivers, I test drove an e60 M5 at Road Atlanta and thought I loved it...so I ordered me one. However, after using it for ~49k miles, I'm sick of it and long for an antiquated three pedal tranny. When my lease expires next month I will be buying a three pedal car as my new daily driver. For the track, floppy pedal cars are fine...for a street car, IMHO you can't beat an old fashioned three pedal tranny...

While the paddle shifters are claimed to be faster around a race track, I drive on the street, and the 3 pedal cars are much more fun on the street. Need to hear a blip on a down shift? Learn to heel and toe.

In addition, the computer controlled clutch is a POS in real life city driving. I can get 100K miles (or more) out of a clutch in a 3 pedal car. Try doing that in a paddle shift car.

My maser has paddles and they do take some getting used to but I dont hate them

My Testa has a manual and I love the accuraccy of the gated shifter

Personally I could take or leave the paddles I have signifigantly more issues with Traction Control and Stability control crap ditch that **** and leave the driving to the drivers not the computers.

can't stand them personally, they have their place at the track but for the street I'll stick with the old do-it-yourself version.

    pro: stupid fast shifts

cons: jerky/hesitant, can't skip gears, not smooth - really? why is this so hard to figure out? and the biggest for me; lack of involvement.

....in my daily driver Audi, with four doors and a honkin' V8. Otherwise, unless I'm going for bettering that track time, I'll take that third pedal.
Back when I made the mistake of thinking that the Dallas stealership might have reversed its anal/cranial inversion, they were almost offended that I expected to order a Manual, as if I had just told them that they were the snooty, gold-digger arm of Fiat. But at that point they had already informed me of how I was expected to secure my place in line by showing that I could be a good ferrari customer.

Oh, paddles can be fun on a date, too.

cars of the original Mille Miglia era didn't use paddles and they were raced. "F1 paddles" do not represent what Ferrari has been about for the majority of it's lifetime as a competitor or maker of road cars. "F1 style" paddles adapted to road cars are a gimmick being passed off as better, when, really, they numb the experience. You're not driving an F1 car at 180-220mph average, needing to beat the other team by .001 sec; you're on public roads, on twisties.

I got rid of my Maser Coupe because it had paddles. Kind of like driving a video game. Going fast it was OK around town it drove me crazy. It was like driving with some one learnig to drive a stick.

I have a question for Mr. Charlie. I noticed that under your profile it says you dont even own a Ferrari. Have you ever even driven a car with paddles. I love my 5 spd and always said I hate paddles and would never own them, then I had a chance to drive a 430 with them and at this point I would have to say Im really not sure which one I would rather have. The car with them was a blast to drive and I really enjoyed it. You stand on your soapbox and shout about hating them and ask others on a FERRARI board to join you and you dont own one. 5spd, 6spd or paddles. Souinds like you are just trying to srit s&*t.

Which one is mor expensive after 10K miles? The paddles because of the software realignment, or the stick because of a cooked clutch?

Get one of each and don't worry about it. It's a plus minus for me. It does diminish the experience somewhat, but that is offset by the obvious technological advances. I don't find it any worse around town.

Actually, the paddles will burn out the clutch WAY before the stick will.

Winner - Stick Shift by a mile (actually about 90,000 miles)

I have an M3 with the 7 speed Getrag DCT and I think it is the best transmission in the world. It has the aggressive/sporty jerkyness or super smooth shifts. DCT is the future. Does a clutch pedal really connect you that much further to the car?

Never driven a paddle shift, but, I have owned ONLY manual transmission cars since I was a kid. Automatics are for OLD people in Caddilacs. To me I think that a paddle shift in a Ferrari is good for say, Paris Hilton, but not for a real driver (but aggree for Grand Prix racing the paddle shifts are superior, but the streets are not the tracks)! But I must say that I do also hate the gate setup on the Ferrari, the clunking when shifting sounds like a truck or something, I would prefer a 5 or 6 speed without the gate. IMO

Manual shifting is what makes driving Fun/Challenging!

So, NO to the paddle, save them for the girls!
