i was always skeptical of other people's stories about people asking them this question...until it happened to me. i was especially surprised because i was in lausanne dropping a friend off when an american woman passed by asking me this question. if ford made mustangs this good looking they might not be going bankrupt !

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadnt heard the same thing myself!

I guess it's the horse that does it but ......you'd think the styling alone would keep them from such misteps....

    True story.

30-ish woman looking at my 328: "Is that the new Mustang?"
    Me: (chuckling a little) "No, it's a Ferrari 328."
30-ish woman: (looking very puzzled) "A what?"
Me: "You know, Ferrari, the Italian sports car company."
    30-ish woman: (blank stare)
Me: "Like Magnum P.I. drove on TV"
    30-ish woman: "Who???"

Thankfully someone interrupted the conversation with fresh beer at that point and she wandered away.

Try living in North Florida. Almost every women who notices my car ask if it's a Mustang. Half the men tell me about a friend or a relative that have a Mustang after asking me about my car. It's like what does a Mustang have to do with my car??

The guy who lives across from my sister has a Delorean and a Muscle car of some type and when my sister told 'em her brother had a Ferrari he said Ferrari stole the horse from Mustang.

I am serious and don't call me Shirley.

Went to the Advance auto parts here and asked for the NGK iridium plugs and had the number with me (forget it now). The two good ole boys there asked what kinda car is it for, I said Fiat. They looked under fiat and said what model so i confessed i had a Ferrari. The one good ole boy said FERRARI? why would you get one dem? "I knew a guy that had one dem what was dey called? uh..oh yeah a Delorean he had one dem". So in his mind a Ferrari and a Delorean are on the same keel ...just won dem little weirdo Foreign jobs .

I asked him if he knew a GTO was a 10 -15 million dollar car and that people wait in line to pay several hundred thousand dollars for new Ferraris and he was just like "what the hell are you talking about a GTO ain't that much". I went on to tell him that Pontiac copied the GTO from Ferrari and kept going from there etc. The other guy just sat there mouth agape knowing that what i was i saying was probably true and it freaked him out.

Lukily some guy walked in the store and yelled out hey can you guys look at my battery? That's when i quietly walked out.

    Unbelievable.

I had my 512 TR in a local car show to benefit the Lions Club and a little boy came up, looked at the engine (the rear deck was up) and asked his father what kind of Mustang was that? His dad told him it was a custom one because the engine was in the back!!! I was standing beside a 3 foot high sign describing the car and wearing a Ferrari Formula One shirt. Unbelievable!!

Tell them it's an Italian Mustang and before they can say 'Sir, don't be ridiculous, Mustangs are American', cloak them in tire smoke screaming FOOORRRRRZZZZAAAAA.

    Just an idea :D

Due to the confusion between the Pony on a Mustang and the Stallion on a Ferrari, I actully thought that my mom's 66 Mustang Convertable was one of the Italian bred machines when I was a little kid. I did have one or two folks confuse the gt4 with a Mustang, thinking it might be one from the Mustang II era!

You should have just wrapped that conversation up with something like, "actually, it's a spaceship and I am from the future."

    LOL! Gotta remember that!

People always say to me "nice Mustang" at gas stations.
I put "shields" on my DD BMW X5 that has a Ferrari FCA club tag and people will ask me "Are you into Porsches?"
