When I registered my 348 in San Jose I had two different people come up during the DMV inspection asking me if it was the "new" Mustang. I just said no and grinned. So did the DMV inspector.

I consider myself a redneck. I have 2 trucks, I live in North Florida and I have a residence in Alabama. I love country music. Though I don't do hard labor anymore, I have picked up rocks on the side of the road for a contruction company I worked for...I have never lived in a trailer, but I dont think you have to live in a trailer to be a redneck....or, a dirtbag, as you would like to call me...

Probably....I do find it very ironic that someone with the last name of Hicks, is labeling all rednecks "dirtbags"...

Basically i label nice simple Southern people who keep to themselves as Good ole boys and people looking to get in fights and get
belligerent as Rednecks. Many kind Southern Folk call themselves Rednecks but it's not the term i use to describe them. For me the term is reserved for the lowest form of white human debris.

While I understand what you're saying, I would be careful when labeling a lifestyle with such derogatory absolutes. Not everyone carries the same definitions as you when it comes to generalizing certain lifestyles and what characteristics that lifestyle denotes or 'takes on'. Even a redneck like me enjoys Ferraris (which is the reason why I have owned three of them). These cars break through to all walks of life, which is why as previous posters have stated, taking the high road and educating is much more productive. Who knows, you might even create a new fan.

    "Is that the new mustang?"

It might have been, but Enzo told Henry to take a hike. ;)
Then tell 'em to look it up.

The one in a hundred that does might learn something.

Actually, according to the history channel the redneck term originated from a labor dispute. The Union favored coal miners went to a southern West virginai town to help break the coal companies hold on the workers, and wore red bandanas around their necks to identify them as a group. Thus the term 'redneck' was born , and originally indicated a more middle class connotation than the non-union workers they went to help.

Yes, that's the town they were going to... Previously I thought the term referred topeople who drive pickup trucks or worked in fields because of the burn typical on the back of your neck.

I think that show on the Discovery Channel hosted by Mr. Cyrus gives a different explaination than most people use to explain the term. It's always been known by most to be a term for farm workers who got a tan on the back of their neck from bending over to work the land in the sun.

Unlike other pejoritives many people like to call themselves Rednecks and wear T-shirts and put on bumper stickers etc. all to brand themselves as Rednecks. The latest T-shirt i've seen is "White trash with money". It's like WTF? Supposedly a Country singers daughter got called that at school and he made a song about it or something. Now people brand themselves with this term too.

Look up the history of Matewan, West Virginia, and the Battle of Blair Mountain.

A rough summary goes something like this:

Non-unionized coal workers in southern west virginia were basically "owned" by the companies (owned their houses, the stores they bought food from, etc.), and the companies were squeezing them with lower wages and higher living costs. They tried to unionize, and the coal companies hired a force of armed "detectives" (thugs) to evict those who did. The sheriff sided with the townspeople who were being evicted, and the confrontation led to a massacre of miners by the "detectives".

Unionized miners were outraged by this, and about 10,000+ of them assembled and marched to defeat the thug detectives. The U.S. government sent troops to stop the unionized miners, which led to more deaths and people being tried (and some imprisoned) for murder, treason, etc. The battle was fought on Blair Mountain. The events stifled union activity in the area, and the coal companies went on abusing their miners for another ten years or so.

It is a very sad chapter in U.S. history. The massacre was among the worst and bloodiest events in American labor history, the uprising was the largest in American history, and the sad events led directly to the formation of many modern U.S. labor laws.

I have nothing against the working farmer as I partially grew up on a ranch: ask me what work is in the sun....farm, another word for family-slave-labor. :)

almost hated it then, now, looking for a large property to re-live the experience...go figure.

BTW, Catholic Priests used to be a good word too, but, sigh, some connotations do change with the times.

Very informative, thank you. This Wikipedia entry cites the Blair Mountain story as a possible origin of the term "redneck" as well as other possible origins. If nothing else, it's an interesting read.

love ferrari's and will probably never have one. too young to tell. but i don't think you guys should be making fun of people. you can if you want. but you shouldn't be offended when someone calls your car a mustang. and if you are offended then don't be arrogant about it. you can always educate them. start it for them. let them hear the way it sounds. either they will get it or they won't. just like i will never understand why some people like bass boats with sparkly paint. different strokes for different folks.
