Horacio Pagani just invented a new material for his new Zonda - the Cinque. Carbon fiber wasn't good enough so he had to develop "carbon-titanium". :)

    The press release:

Pagani Automobili is proud to announce a new Zonda version is born: the Zonda Cinque. An incredibile car which will be produced only in 5 (five) limited pieces, already all sold and will be street legal. Technology - In order to satisfy the downforce requirements of 750kg at 300kph, the Cinque features a new larger front splitter, a new adjustable rear wing as well as a modified underbody and rear diffuser. New intakes for brake ducts increase the airflow to brake disks and wheelhubs. The air scoop on the central monococque feeds the 678hp Mercedes-AMG V12 powerplant. Up to 780Nm are unleashed on the bespoke Pirelli Pzero tyres. For the first time ever in a Zonda a sequential 6 speed gearbox is installed. The adaptive gearbox demands no compromises from the driver, offering lightning fast gearshifts and comfortable use in heavy traffic.

Having become a public issue only recently, fuel economy and efficiency have been grappled with since the mid 1990s at Pagani, its engineers constantly developing new technologies and materials to reduce the weight of their cars. A new composite fibre, carbon-titanium, a development by Pagani, has been purposely created for the Zonda Cinque and will find its use in future generations of Pagani vehicles. Forged monoblock aluminium wheels, bolts and nuts are realised in titanium to significantly reduce the unsprung masses. The fully adjustable ergal shock absorbers with titanium springs have been developed at Öhlins according to the latest technologies and to the Pagani specifications. Interior - While maintaining the level of refinement usual for Pagani cars, the interior reveals the sporty pretensions. Leather racing seats developed by Toora with 4-point seatbelts are surrounded by carbon fibre laminated Cr-Mo roll-bars. The ergonomic shift paddles behind the steering wheel as the rest of the controls have been studied to offer highest levels of precision for a deep immersion into the driving pleasure. Driven by passion and following the renowned automotive tradition of Modena and the Renaissance concepts of art and science by Leonardo Da Vinci, another automotive sculpture is born at the Pagani Ateilier, the 1 million ( tax) Zonda Cinque with its unmistakable, bespoke livery is reserved for five lucky owners, guaranteeing unique emotions every time they will get near it.

    Technical Specifications:

    - ECU, Traction control, ABS by Bosch Engineering

    - Inconel/titanium exhaust system coated with ceramic

I little off topic... but do Pagani's hold their value well. Can you pick up a used one for below MSRP or do they actually appreciate?

If you find one below MSRP, call me!:)
The early Zonda C12s were for sale at a MSRP of circa 250.000 euros, now those change hands for no less than 400.000 euros.
Zonda F: MSRP of 680.000 euros as of 2006, they sold one for circa 780.000 euros in April 2007, when Fs were still available.
And with the upcoming C9, Pagani will triple his production. Means that in 2 years there will be as many C9s as Zondas in 10 years.
And this will make the Zonda's value increase more.

Carbontitanium: yes, I can confirm it will find a greater application on the new Pagani hypercar, due to be unveiled at Geneva 2009.

so, to be clear, we are talking about Carbon-Titanium Composite, and not Ferro Carbon Titanium alloy, yes?

If it is C-Ti Composite, i wonder which kind Pagani is using...

    Carbon-titanium composites,

    United States Patent 5733390

Abstract:A method of combining a beta titanium alloy with advanced carbon composites, the combination having a matched yield strength and modules of elasticity ratio. When the combination is adhesively bonded both parts will approach maximum yield strength and fail at a similar amount of total strain. The titanium and carbon composites are combined by first abrading the titanium to be bonded, coating the titanium with platinum, aging the titanium, spraying primer on the coated titanium, applying adhesive to the primer side of the titanium and then applying the carbon to the adhesive. This allows the carbon composite to bond securely to the titanium. This composite uses the best properties of each

Or is it a Titanium coated Carbon Fiber?

    Metal-coated carbon fibers,

    United States Patent 4132828

Abstract:An assembly, useful in producing a carbon fiber-reinforced metal, of a plurality of carbon fibers each coated with a matrix metal layer, the fibers having bonded points at the metal layers to form a two-dimensional network structure or both a two-dimensional network structure and a three-dimensional network structure, produced advantageously by an ion plating process or a vacuum deposition process.

I'm sure it would be a carbon tit composite. that sounds like a lot of work to produce a fabric with the titanium in it. Btw, i wonder how much more strenght it has as well as lightness??

It's carbon fiber with titanium threads added to it. No big deal. I have been using it for years now.

can you tell me a bit more about this material? so, the ti is woven along with the carbon, and not deposited onto the carbon before being woven? thanks,

Ohhh I swear that I looked in your profile and it said you owned Clubsport #58 or something. Is there a Zonda owner on this site? Also how was driving the Zonda?

I believe that all 5 were ordered by a dealer in the far east who wanted a road legal version of the R, Pagani would only make it if he did 5. So they did hence the cinque, however i have recently heard on the grape vine that there is one floating about available for purchase.
