http://www.motortrend.com/av/features/112_0811_2009_dodge_viper_acr_nurburgring_record_video/index.html Not too shabby, but its slower then a GTR is
You do realize that means the ACR just took the record. 7:22 is 4 seconds faster than the ZR1, 3 seconds faster than the V-Spec's supposed time, & 2 seconds faster than the LF-A's supposed time. Unbelievable. 7:22?! Just, wow. I had a good feeling that it would have set a great time, but that its gearing would slow it down on the straights. But to set a 7:22 means it had to have been flying through the first half of the course
I always saw Viper coupes as beautifully stiled long lines and curves. It still unfortunately sounds like a viper. Imagine what the car would lap if it had a little more in the final ratio. Bouncing off the limiter all the time, even down Dottinger Hoe. It wouldn't surprise me if with better gearing, the car would lap 7:10's if nothing else was changed. Very impressive why will nobody question the validity of the lap time here? 1. The car has very soft semi-slick tires 2. the car has very progressive aerodymamic aids 3. the car has tremendous power and torque 4. the car has reduced in weight (only slightly, but in important areas) such a combination shouldn't lose
Because there really isn't a need to when you look at how the car comes equipped. It also had no problem being faster than GT2 & the GT-R on other tests. The only thing that surprises me is that it was actually able to take the record for the 'Ring. I figured it would have come in a few seconds behind the GT-R & GT2.
That's awesome! ACR just took away the spot light from ZR1 and GTR. But the question is, where is Porsche, Lambo, Ferrari, Benz, Audi, BMW, etc? They are loosing the game on their own back yard. And to those people who say Euro cars are more than performance, I do agree with you. No American or Japanese company can match the luxury and performance mix of Euros. But now Euro cars are falling behind the performance department in a big way. I hope they can catch up.
It's a totally badass car. I'm glad they made an excuse to stick a big wing on the back. I don't understand why more of these performance cars don't have the big wing. Even Ferrari, with the winged 40 and 50, finally got rid of it with the Enzo. Huge mistake. And it's hard to come by a Lamborghini these days with a wing. I suppose when every Accord and Sentra started sporting a whale-tail, spoilers just went out of vogue; however, we can't let those sorts ruin a good thing. Top Gear put on their own big wing on the Koenigsegg, Mopar put that mamma jamma on the Viper, and the results have been nothing short of golden. If F1, Indycar, and now even Nascar all need wings, why should we settle for anything less? Man, you just don't know what's good for you.
Lambo. has that supposed Murcie SV, though to be honest, I'm not expecting it to perform like the ACR, just be really damn fast. And I'm sure both Porsche & the red headed Italians are up to something.
that really is ridiculous how much he is hitting the limiter on the straight. I understand it about 90% of the time when he is approaching the corner... there were a few he could have grabben another gear... but with so many corners, and a car so fast and a bumpy surface, sometimes finishing is worth much more than wadding the car up over a couple of tents or even a second in total. he should have shifted to 5th though. Then again, he is clearly a professional driver, and I am sure he would have thought of that if it would have helped
After Nissan announced in May of this year that its 480-horsepower, all-wheel-drive GT-R lapped Germany's infamous 20.8-km (12.9 miles) Nurburgring Nordschleife in a time of 7:29, Viper people became restless. Then, just a month later, following Chevrolet's declaration that its 638-horsepower supercharged Corvette ZR1 was the king of the hill, breaking the GT-R's record with a time of 7:26, Viper people became downright mad. Not the folks who work for Dodge, mind you, but the members of the Viper Club of America, a group of Viper fanatics that in fact stretches its arms well beyond America, as far as Japan and Germany. Sick and tired of hearing about other cars setting records at the Nordschleife, they wanted to see their pride and joy-namely, Dodge's new track-attacking 600-horsepower Viper ACR (American Club Racer)-take a shot at the record books. But what could they do about it? Well, they could (and did) bug Dodge-specifically, the Street & Racing Technology team-to the point that SRT said, What the heck, let's go for it. So SRT rented the Nordschleife for a half-day (at a cost of $2000 Euro per hour), shipped two ACRs over to Germany, hired a pro driver through Zakspeed (a race team that runs Vipers in the ADAC Zurich 24h Race at the Nrburgring), and hoped for good weather and, more important, a lap time quicker than 7:26. And, for posterity, the SRT team figured having a media outlet on-hand was a wise idea, so they invited Motor Trend 1.Driver had never driven the ACR before. 2. He broke the record on his third lap in the car. 3. He missed two shifts (not just one). 4. He faced a pretty strong headwind on that final straight - so much so that the Viper's stock gearing and enormous down force made it impractical to use 5th gear. Sad to see those expensive german cars so far behind.... love the michigan plate Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
You clearly do not know what you are talking about. It is *NOT* slower than the GTR's time. If you think it was, just keep reading the above sentence until you get it!
What is your basis for saying would lap 7:10's with better gearing? That would be a huge difference. I don't think gearing is going to improve the lap time by 12 seconds - not even close. As for the validity of the lap time - this is a 600hp car with IIRC >1000lbs of downforce and weighs in around 3300lbs. This lap time makes perfect sense. The reason the GTR lap time was questioned was it was only a few seconds off the ACR, yet had nowhere near the aero, nowhere near the power, and drastically higher weight.... ergo, it doesn't make sense (save for the "it's tricked out man!" rationale). How do you figure the Vipers tires are "semi slick"???? Either a tire is a slick or it is not. The Viper doesn't come with "semi slicks".
http://www.michelinman.com/tires/ultra-high-performance-sport/pilot-sport-cup/ That looks semi slick to me.
you misunderstand, 7:10's doesn't equate to 7:10 lap time, but in the teens..... i suppose I could've written it as "sub 7:20" as it would mean the same thing.... but will less misunderstandings. exactly huh, your speaking another laguage here (j/ki) they are semi-slick michillen Pilot Sport Cup tires. That makes them a semi-slick. They are the same optional tire for the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, a comparable tire to the rubber on t he Ferrari 360 CS, and the same rubber that is on the BMW M3 CSL. All semi-slicks.
Just imagine what is going to happen once these guys get their interiors "right". From a performance standpoint, everything else is there now. RMX
Wow, impressive! I just with it had "normal" street tires like the ZR1. And I agree, the one bad thing about Vipers is that sound like do do. But the ACR sure looks mean as hell.
Just for comparison, Viper ACR - 7:22 Viper SRT 10 - 7:59 37 seconds improvement! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordschleife_fastest_lap_times
several problems there The SRT 10 used was the original convertible; which "only" has 500 horsepower. The base viper now has 600 @ 8.4 liters vs. 8.2 liters. the 7:56 C5 Z06 lap is noted as being driven by Dave Hill, it was done by John Henriechy... that list can be taken with a grain of salt IMO.
http://www.michelinman.com/tires/ult...lot-sport-cup/ Come on SRT Mike... From your other posts, I can tell that you've been a track rat for a long time... Most of the time I agree with you, but if the ACR is on the tires noted above, it is running basically a DOT competition tire (call it what you want, semi-slick is a term that got coined when Goodyear came out the the VR-S, the "tread", other than the two deep grooves, was less than 1/64 of an inch deep and was gone after the first or second lap) and you of all people know that is probably good for a lot of time on a track as long as the "Ring". Most certainly it is a huge advantage over the tires the Corvette was using. Heck it is worth two or three seconds in a sixty second autocross, I would bet it is worth 15 to 20 seconds (if not a lot more) in a 7 minute lap of the ring... I realize that (again, assuming that the tire shown above is what the viper was on for it's "record" lap) maybe that's the tire that comes on the car, but come on, let's get real, if the Viper beat the Corvette by a small amount using a tire with that much more grip, that, given the similar tires, (and we can put any tire on a car after we buy it), the Corvette is likey the "faster" car. And that is, after all, what are we trying to debate here...
