My mechanic says I need a new one and it's very expensive, what? What is it and how expensive could it be? Where can I get one? Dennis (308GTBi)

It's the big round (6 inch Diameter or thereabout) mass of metal on the crankshaft in front of the engine where all the belts rotate on. Don't know what is wrong with yours but it is probably impossible to get for a 246.

According to Nick from Forza Ferrari, pretty much all or most of the harmonic balancers from the 308's and other cars of similar age I suppose are bad by now.
I was curious about his harmonic balancer that he builds for the 308 at one point. He says there is some rubber in there which supposedly dries out and eventually the crankshaft goes bad. On mine the crankshaft looks like new and my car is a 78 with 100k on it. I am still not sure what to make of the harmonic balancer story.

I found a few guys in hemmings that redo the balancers and it wasnt expensive. Later, when I went thru the motor I had it balanced and the balancer was fine, cost $60.Ive had Ferrari HBs done a number of times.

Okay, the guys found a guy in Oregon to rebuild it, they had one done not long ago, and it was still in the shop, so I saw it and it looked fine! So, mine will be sent off to Oregon, and soon, I hope, returned! New one is outrageously expensive.

share the rebuild source would ya? . .. I've got a couple I'd like to get done if I can't make some reasonable priced aftermarket piece work .. any thoughts on 350hpMondials drive pulleys that eliminate harmonic balancer? . .. risky?

    thanks,

    Sean
