Looking to put new shields on my Ferrari 328 fenders. Anybody want to post some pics of their shield placements. To give e an idea where looks best?

    Thanks

You really should examine the F40 placement, or a 288GTO......those were the only 308s that had them Factory installed, go with that!

    I'm torn...

Part of me wants to insist that the 328 did not come from the factory with shields, so you should not add them.

The other part of me says it's your car, you paid for it, make it look however you like.

That said, I like the 288 suggestion. See how the factory placed them on the most similar body style...

Nice compromise suggestion in my mind. ;-)

If your torn, you can always mount a shield on one side only. But then I reckon you'll be torn as to which side.

Fo me, it's a no-brainer. My 308 is fiberglass so magnetic shields won't work. The paint is original so the stuck-on shields would work, but I'd pull off the paint should I decide to remove them: not a reversible maneuver.

Anyway, a more appropriate shield for my 1976 North American GTB would be a NART decal.

You are too right. I would have to buy a second car, one shield each, alternate sides, and then be forced to decide which to drive each day.. Making a run to Home Depot, mostly left turns, need the car with the shields on the..... Wait!!! How would I get home?

Oh, I give up. Brand me a Purist. My car will remain shield-less. Enjoy your car however you wish!

Do you put shields so that no one will mistake it for a Toyota? Come on .. if it didn't come from the factory then why make a non-original addition? How many prancing horsies do you need ? .. front, wheels, back .. on the mirror backs on some 328's and Euro cars .. stering wheel.

I dony know. Why dont you ask the people that paid a ridiculous amount of money on their new Ferraris for the fender shield option.

Seems like almost every 3x8 has them.

Its not like Im taking Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa and changing her to a blonde.

There original purpose was to identify the car as belonging to SF.
Knowing my car is not run by SF, I wouldn't want them on it.
Personally they are a creation of the early years where they had a real reason to be. In later years the meaning has been lost to the point where they're common on street cars.
So, not for me but I don't begrudge others their fashion statement.

My car came with them too. I just took them off To apply new ones I bought. Used some Goo Gone to take off the sticky from the paint. And the paint was fine. And I think they were on a long time.

    Agree...enough horsies already.

My 308 had shields when I bought it; took them off.

I do have a set of magnetic shields that I got off ebay a few years ago, so if the mood strikes, there they are, stuck to the side of my garage toolbox.

I guess I should of looked at it when I took them off. Before I put the new ones on to see if I liked it better without them.
    I guess that was dumb.

Im the type like likes to keep my cars original too. Go figure.

    got this with mine...

    Shield Placement Reference

    308 and 328 Driver's Side Fender

Using the crease that runs along the fender as your guide, the upper right hand corner of the shield should be 2 1/8" below the crease straight below 2 3/4" along the crease from the door/fender joint. Reverse all measurements for a passenger side.

I'm a designer and professional photographer. For me it's all about visual lines, depth, and balance of a scene that I look at. I personally think that the 328 is missing something visually without them. Some darker colors take up the space well just like a dark suit and help the car feel a little smaller.

The shields on my argento car seem to finalize the weight on the car throughout the profile lining up with the windshield line. Makes it a tad more less rear biassed on my mind. Always has. Always will feel perfect to me now. A visual accent in the perfect spot. I'm not trying to imitate a race car from the 50's. I just think the shields are a very unique ferrari mark not seen on any other type of car. I do like the moose shields i saw on a volvo though..,

I have never noticed the wheel centers on any f-car I see on the street and really think the rest of the badging is very simple and tasteful. I even think the shields are tasteful and not over the top.

I don't want to concourse the car. I'm just looking to enjoy the car, celebrate the prettiest design, and love looking at every detail with my eyes and through the lens. No one will ever mistake it for a Japanese car, although lamborghini was in the running from the hotel manager on my way bringing it home. I wouldn't care what anyone thinks it is. It's my car for my driving and visual pleasure. Happy to have good natured conversations about it and the shields! Hope that answers why I think the shields are aok and actually help bring out the best of the car.

I suppose that when one buys a 308/328 you buy the right to do anything to it that you want. I'm not a concours freak .. but I do enter mine for judging occasionally (one Class win and two Platinums) and I suspect the judges would subtract a lot of points for shields. But if you like the look and have no intent on being judged (which can be a PITA) then go for it.

Obviously, anyone can do whatever makes them happy with their own car. For you, since yours came with the shields already on it, you've probably never really seen it or considered it without the shields. While you may find it balances the visual weight, I find they are a distraction to the overall design of the car. Most cars are red or black, in your case argento, but whatever color "background" there is, with shields now there is this sizeable yellow triangle drawing your eye right toward it. Its the equivalent of buying a beautiful dark colored suit but feeling you need a very bright yellow tie to complete your outfit. Sure you can do it. But do you want to have a great looking overall outfit or just have brightly colored tie that overshadows the rest of the outfit? Although, for arguments sake not much will overshadow a 3X8 in beauty, I just think the shields are a distraction. To me the 328 is one of the most beautiful designs and doesn't need shields. Maybe I'm too much of a purist for originality, as they don't bother me on 360s or 430s. But I suppose if a car has had shields on for many years you may want to leave them as the paint underneath the sheilds may no longer be the same color as the rest of the paint which has been exposed to sunlight etc. Just my 2 cents on the topic, but in the end people should simply enjoy their cars however they look best to them.

    Best regards,
    Dino

I view fender shields as a marque that identifies the car to others as a Ferrari...believe it or not there are some people (not afficianados) that don't recognize Ferraris at a glance. Regardless, the later cars represented Ferrari's racing pedigree and what better way to draw attention to Enzo's marque. To question the need to have these fender badges on later cars is to raise the same question on why have TUBI exhausts on later cars, why have 308's with 16" wheels, etc. We all love these cars and want to ensure they display the excellance that went into them at the time and if new technology allows the 308/328 owner to really enjoy their commitment so be it...Again, how many 308's are Concours cars to begin with...I enjoy driving mine and I also enjoy restoring it.

I like them myself & agree car side looks plain without them. But again I also think the valve colors look plain & boring without red crinkle paint on them..

No they do not look "ricer" or wrong for the car.

Everyone has a different opinion, go with what YOU like, you will be satisfied with the result... either way.

Scott has your answer. I made my own magnetic shields, bought the resin versions off ebay, then went to a local sign store for some magnetic backing. I take them on/off at will. But they haven't been on in about 4 years. I decided the factory didn't ship them that way, and it looks better without them.

My shields reside in the same place as Scotts, on my tool box. I guess I should dust them off.
