Speed is money, how fast do you want to go?

Love the boxers, but a 550 is a much better car for less.

a cam with more lift and same duration should not effect bottom end at all correct? . . or is that a gross generalization?

FWIW my first cams were .406 lift with the stock 242 duration and there was no lack of bottom end or problems with idle . . just camshaft longevity :).

speed is also talent mate . .. to kinda quote one of the greatest engineers that has ever lived IMO . .. . "good engineers do for a pound what typical engineers do for 10" . . .the way I see things lately it's more like a 100:1 . ..

do you really want to know how much I spend on this hobby? . . . anytime I get into that topic .. . especially here in Cali . . .I get it thrown in my face how much money I "could" be making if I wasn't spending all my time playing with F cars . . . and why do we need money again??? . .. thought it was so we could play with F cars . .. it's a vicious circle :).

I know. But the real trick is power/weight.

Have you looked at taken mass out of the car?

eventually I'm gonna build a dedicated track car with a cage like my 911 is . .. I have a wrecked 348 that side tracked my entire 308 development (and work) but now I'm back on it . . I met a couple guys in Monterey that are thinking about building the car and me supplying engines and gearboxes but if that doesn't materialize it's just in the cards that I must build a full on track 308 . .. my 911 only has like 240 hp and runs 1:32's @ Big Willow . . . oh and it's a 1973 . .. age has nothing to do with speed on the track . .. it's all about weight just like you said . . . I don't want to destroy any of my street cars to this degree yet . .. hopefully I'll pick up a complete POS to start with if I end up doing the whole package myself.

I guess what I'm hearing is there doesn't appear to be anything obviously wrong with my installation right now . . and since I lead everyone when we go on drives maybe I don't need anymore power . .. . just need a different group to drive with :).

    cheers.

edit: I don't do Big Willow without a cage anymore so unfortunately this car won't see that track . .. maybe the streets of Willow . . . there's a discussion in Socal section about safety . .. there's plenty of yahoos at these big track events that don't realize just how dangerous it really is . . something I am thankful that the Porsche club educated me about . .. . there's a reason those guys make you autocross and run small tracks before going on the big stuff . . it's called education :) . . makes you want a figgin' cage . .. now if you don't want to go fast that's different . . but every guy that goes to Big Willow thinks he should be pushing turn 8 & 9 to the limit 'cause they've heard about it . .. scarey.

The stock stuff isn't bad and much better than other brand stock stuff.....but the flow is about 20% less than a 3.0 liter engine actually needs at 7700. The manifold out flows the heads by a couple cfm, so basically running with or without the manifold producess the same flow result....until you touch the heads then the manifold instantly becomes the problem and as soon as you touch the manifold the TB becomes the problem. They are a very well matched set from the factroy so it's an all or nothing proposition.

The head flow continues to go up with increasing valve lift so there is hp to be had with higher lift cams, but again that puts you back to the manifold and TB are the restriction. High lift intake cams and ITBs on a custom intake would add some hp, I'd guess 10rwhp but it might be a bit more.

I guess I'll just focus on getting my other motors done for now . . .

I machined out all the busted studs this morning and there was a blob of aluminum stuck in the intake port . .. I almost went thru the f'ing head machining it out .. . what a retard . . . nice thing is I didn't bust into the water jacket so if anyone's porting out there we can see how much material there is in that area (sigh) . .. right below the valve seat .. I'll post some pics later.

    cheers.

Put an $800 dollar nitrous kit on the car - set it up for around a 35% HP increase and you will have more hp than you can make at 10 times the price. It will take a half day to install and can be easily removed with no sign that it was ever there. Current nitrous systems are safe - they are NOT like the first systems of the late 70's. As long as you restrict yourself to not more that a 30-40% HP increase, there is virtually NO downside other than refilling the bottle.

NOTE: I spent many years as an engine builder looking down at nitrous as not "REAL" HP. But I was finally converted. It works extremely well, is safe and easy and you lose no driveability. A 340HP (nice conservative 80HP shot) 308/328 would embarrass a 355 - should be able to produce a 12.25 1/4 mile time as opposed to the 355's advertised 12.7 and the oem 328's low 14s shown in some tests, mid 15s in others.

NOTE 2 - when comparing car acceleration, if available, look at the trap speeds, NOT the ET. The trap speed tells you how much power the car is making. The ET just tells you how good the driver is a launching the car and this can vary widely. It is not unusual to see a full second difference in the ET of the same car because of the way the car was launched but the trap speed at the end will be essentially the same in both cases.

Nitrous seems to be looked down on pretty severly in ferrari land because almost nobody drag races their ferraris. Most owners seem to aspire to road racing (tracking really) vs drag racing and nitrous is of very limited value on a road course.

Absolutely agree, but if 'twas only about money and speed, we'd all be driving something else much more capable and reliable. There is that 'personality' that these cars have, a bit moreso with the simpler ones, that is difficult to quantify, and changes a bit car to car. As I think you are like minded, perhaps something about the class, elegant balance and restraint, yet keeping with a raw edge. And, you and I have grown out of adolescent street racing.
I remember we once agreed that there was appeal for both of us in having a 350 hp car on 205/225 series XWX... :)

If you are REALLY road course track racing the car, then I agree that Nitrous is not the way to go. But usually what folks want is to be able to outrun somebody in the informal stoplight grand prix races. So it's important to determine what you need. MOST people do not race their cars on a track. In the situation where the Corvette wants to prove that it is the faster car at the stoplight, nitrous is an ideal solution.

okay worked on the bbq today since there's nothing for me to do on my other motor for now.

I look at the 308 as a good start point . . .could build a cobra or some custom Harley (BTDT) but now I don't mind starting with something dirty with crappy wiring and have enough experience to not get all up tight about chaulking and overspray . .. it just reflects what was going on at the factory during production .. . I can tell alcohol is frequently involved but when isn't it in manufacturing "in the real world" :)?

I have less in my engines than I did the Harley I built . . and I took a bath on it . . . . if I couldn't do this all myself there's no way I'd do it . . .I'd play with Chevys and Fords and have just as much fun . .. maybe more? :)

The only reason I wanted nitrous was so when I autocrossed with the P club they'd freak when I got TTOD . . just a personal thing I guess . .. I'm really bummed the F clubs aren't more about tracking and getting more performance out of the cars as a whole like the P club . .. they call it "the slipperly slope" once you start tracking etc. and I don't care what it is when you go track it there's things you start tweaking and can improve .. even if it is a Ferrari .. from the factory it's setup for safety on the street . . people die that don't get it if it wasn't that way . .. even on all the P cars from the factory first thing guys do is max out camber and then buy parts to get more than factory allowed . . don't know what my point is . . oh yeah . .maybe I'll revive my thread about "free race motor" . . maybe someone grew a testacle :)

    cheers all

    pic of day

and I know nitrous isn't good for autocross and but it's all I need to really raise some eyebrows .. would want it stealth too . . .actually TTOD is out of the question but anyone who knows how serious the P guys are gets an idea of the internal turmoil when one of their brothers comes down with a 308 and hurts 'em . .. boo hoo ;)

    cheers all . . . it's so fun

I wanna have my own race team one day . . . don't know how big or how small . .. I think of this as testing ... maybe I'm the only one stupid enough to dream it . . . .dreams start somewhere you know.

    enjoy it why you can

In that case, you don't really need more power, driver training would be worth more than ANY high performance equipment! :)
