Here's the abbreviated car-guy story. I had our F355B detailed by a local detailer who came highly regarded on a German-car board. This detailer was mobile and came to my office and sold me a clay-n-wax job. Sure, I thought, why not ... it needed a good sprucing up anyway. Well, when my wife saw the results later in the day, she went quiet. We didn't touch the subject until it was late ... and then it popped up.

"That guy ruined the paint on the Ferrari," she said.
    "Wha...?"
"Why did you ask him to clay it when all it needed was a wash? I could have done a better clay job!" She continued.

The tone of her voice was alarming, and the conversation just went downhill from there. All her previous work on the car, her efforts, were irreparably scratched away by this fellow. And she was very hurt that I'd entrusted the car to "some local detailer who came highly regarded on a German-car board." This went around and around for hours into the night, and there was nothing I could do to get myself out of it. Except to call in the expert. Yes, the expert, Bob Willis.

As soon as it was light, I dug up Bob's number from another F-Chat post and rang him up. He was on his way to a client, but remembered who I was and asked, "what can I do for you?"

"Bob, I need to dig myself out of a hole," I said. I continued with the tale above, and he listened emphatically. "April's really mad at me, and wanted me to sell the car because I don't know how to take care of it. I can't sell the Ferrari, Bob! :( You gotta help me!" Bob told me he was booked solid (this was leading up to Concorso Italiano / Historics weekend, oh what rotten timing), but he would find some way to take a look at the car as soon as he could.

Somehow, he found a slot open and came to see the car. It was worse than I'd described it ... there were swirls and gouges aplenty; highlighting the potential of damage when the operator (detailer) doesn't know the impact of the tools (the clay bar) in his hand. Bob needed two whole days to correct all the ills that had befallen the paint on my poor F355 ... and he didn't have two days open. So we had to reschedule. At this point, I assured April that if anyone could fix things, it was Bob. By then, she had cooled off to a slow simmer, and extended a stay of execution on me.

Well, Bob came through. The Rosso Barchetta paint on the F355 has never looked better since we've owned it. I don't have the vocabulary to express the thoroughness and completeness of his work, nor do I have the expression to describe the extreme happiness I had when April called me up to say, "Have you seen the car? It looks awesome!" Actually, to say Bob "came through" is underrepresenting how much effort it took for him to correct and remove the scratches, swirls, marks and spots on the paint. He toiled away for some very long hours and the results are nothing short of incredible.

I'm glad we have Bob in our community; he's a real car guy and a master in his profession. And at least in my case, he's also an A-1 (carnut-family) marriage counselor!

    Thanks Bob!

That is amazing looking. It's hard to imagine how clay bar can ruin a paint. Maybe the guy just didn't wash the clay residue well? Either way, big props for Bob.

The knee is better, stayed off of it for a whole week and found out daytime tv will suck the life force out of you!! as everything is geared for the not gainfully employed. The doctor said I had a spained mcl, and to me it felt like I was kneebarred so now it is back to work to get caught up.

Yeah, after years of lurking and looking over Nizam's shoulder, I finally created an account here on F-chat. All I can say is Bob made me do it! Our F355 looks incredible. It's never looked better and it's all thanks to Bob's hard work. :D

We had booked a new guy to wash our cars, and Nizam for some reason told him to clay the Ferrari on the first visit. This after I had just spent 3 days with the finest composition clay, using lots of lubricant, removing house paint overspray acquired from somewhere (not our house!). I guess it was brain fade on Nizam's part, and cluelessness on the part of the "detailer". In any case, after that treatment, the car looked like it had been hit with a brillo pad. I was beyond words - for a while anyway. ;)

Since I was not in the mood to go out an buy the tools to fix the job (I used to detail many moons ago), the only solution was Bob. Was that ever the right choice! The car looks simply incredible. It almost hurts to contemplate driving it now!

Words cannot adequately describe my satisfaction - a grateful *smooch* to Bob! He deserves all the good words and none of the bad ones anybody says about him! ;)

    Alex,

When the bumpers are de-stickered and THEN re-painted, I will square the car away.
