Guys.... I was just wondering which is your favourite gear on the 328? Do you love the rapid pace of 1st/2nd gear or is it the outright stretch off being in 3rd gear?

    I have to say I am torn between 2nd & 3rd...

    Whats your favourite & why?

3rd in the twisties, 4th on the highway.

Both seem to offer nice torque at the start of the usuable RPM range (4000) and then offer good engine braking if needed.

Being a newbie owner, my take is probably 2nd or 3rd in my 348, but when I rode with Bullfighter in his 328, I would say 3rd was pretty sweet.

On the highway behind some sloooooooow Prius in 4th, when it finally moves out of the way, step on the throttle (compensating for his lack of CO2), rev it up to 7500 and THEN shift up to 5th. It's this shift that makes me grin every time :)

That is a trick question imho. My favorite gear is the one that maximizes the car's power so as to achieve maximum push/speed from the corner's apex to the track out.

Yes, a very good answer. 2nd and 3rd gears at 4,000 to 5,000 rpms, sounds really great, the whole neighborhood hears me comming.

Yesterday I hit 3000 miles in my almost 2 week old 328 and have to say that I don't have a favorite gear. They all seem to work really well!

Frankly, I'm more amazed at how much torque is available at rather low RPM. I never expected there to be ANY power down low with a little 3.2 engine that is known as a revver. Unless I WANT to downshift, I've found no real need to do so when cruising/passing in 5th at normal interstate speeds.

A great car and a LOT more fun to drive than my 996 series Porsche 911 which I bought new and sold 7 years later without the slightest regret. Should have bought the 328 when I bought the 911. Of course, the 911 was my daily driver - 56 miles/day for the whole time. Not sure the 328 would have done so well but I wish I had had the nerve to buy it then and see!

There's a heck of a lot of them that redline before that, you know... And besides, 5th is not even my last gear... :)

To answer the question - for me there is not really a favourite gear but a favourite rpm band. Above 5000 rpm my 550 is just awesome, both in power and sound. If you go to the redline in 3rd you're already over 100mph.

As for the 365 BB - I have to spend some time with it first after I pick it up next week, but first impressions were the same as the 550 - 5000 to 7700 rpm: what a glorious experience. Very different from the 550 but religious nonetheless.
