    Hi all,

I've been reading about the chirping noise, banshee, etc., in older threads. My 80 GTBi has the air pump removed (was like that when I bought it), and the exhaust makes a chirp/squeal noise at idle. I have clearly identified the hard acceleration "VW beetle" noise, thanks to a sound file someone posted in an old thread, and that doesn't bother me. But at idle, my car sounds like an accessory pulley is squeaking. I spent a couple of hours with a screwdriver and a stethoscope to verify that no bearings, etc. are sqealing, and in the process distinctly realized that the sound was coming from two places: The rear (of the car, by the trunk) exhaust manifold, and to a lesser extent the exhaust joint on the right side near the control arm (although there is not a leak there, the sound seems to resonate there). Up close, it sounds like air passing, but from a few feet away, it sounds like I have an alternator or power steering pump on a 1985 Ford Tempo that is about to bite the dust.

Again, it is at IDLE. So, is this the infamous air rail plug noise?

If so, can someone post a photo of them (in car) for the purpose of identification? (2-valve injected) Also, I want to see what the heat shielding should look like, as my car has 73k miles and the heat shielding has seen better days.

And again, if so, what is the latest on plugging/fixing?

    Thanks,

    Tony :)

    Tony,

Is your air rail still mounted??? What, if anything, did you plug the holes with?

Sounds virtually identical to a my car after air pump and rail removal, but before properly plugging the holes. I got a set of plugs from a f-chatter (Thank you Chris Morse) and it cured the sound. Now, all I need is a new exhaust!!!

I believe that a couple other posters had spare sets of plugs or a line on a supply. Hopefully, they will pipe up if you need a set and get you in the right direction.

    Andy
