I for quite some time have been a fan of the lancia delta integrale. there is one in my local area that has been sat on a drive for at least 2 years too my knowledge and has probably been there a lot longer than that. its in terrible condition and with it being a lancia, it rusts! in fact it has quite a bit of rust! im young, dont have a large income but i want to save the car. was just wondering not for driving purposes because i could not afford the insurance yet but as a sunday hobby to fix the thing up, ball park does anyone have any idea what an operation like this costs? i seem to remember a thread on a 205 gti under similar circumstances

The 205GTi was mine, I ended up selling it on as it was beyond economical repair in my opinion. You'll most likely find the same with the Lancia. I bought another 205GTi that was already sorted and mechanically sound for probably a third of what my restoration would have cost:)

dont do it!!!! I brought my Lotus Sunbeam as a non runner, but with next to zero rust (garaged for 15 years) and then proceeded to spend the better part of £15k on it. And now its just in storage again!!!!!

If its in your way I will take it off your hands for £2k:D:D

Seriously though as the others say it could easily be far too uneconomical. Also is it definitely an Integrale and not a standard Delta badged up. A friend has a concours white integrale and he also has a delta turbo thats a rust bucket. He said he was keeping it just for the engine. Main differences are flared arches and (I think) Lhd only on Integrales

Call in anytime - there's usually a few things in various states of disrepair that might give you an idea of what is involved.
(Ignore the address on the website though - same postcode, but Unit F!!)
    Cheers, Al.

A freind of mine bought one from Autotrader and did not take anyone with him to veiw the car that had any mechanical knowledge (he certainly has none!) He then took it to a specialist (Tank Barrett comes to mind) whom upon inspecting it said that it had rusted around the front bulkhead which apparently is an achilles heel of these cars, and it was going to have to have the engine out to effect repairs....... anyhow the car had such a lot wrong with it that my pal had'nt noticed that the quote to enable an MOT was around £5K........ total value of car when done.......£5k.........Caveat Emptor!

    Jason,

Go into this with your eyes open. If you really, really fancy the project and you know it will probably be uneconomic, both in cash and personal time terms, but you still want to do it... that is your free choice.

Remember the car hasn't been used, therefore:
    1) Any water leaks will not get dried out by the heating ventilation, hence hidden rust, weak floors, strange mildew.
    2) The engine has been static, two cylinders will be open (valves depressed). Those valve springs will be wrecked, there will be moisture in the bores and possible corrosion. The water pump and other shafts will have rust and the oil seals will all be suspect. You might be lucky, but allow for a full rebuild.
    3) Gearbox, likewise the shafts will have rust and will need polishing, the seals will be wrecked. The rest of the gearbox should be okay (fairly well sealed and full of oil)
    4) Everything electrical will have surface corrosion, switches may be iffy, multiplugs will not connect properly, alternator, motors, windscreen wipers, fans will all need a bit of TLC and it all takes time to sort. Even lamp holders will be suspect.

Draw up a budget... list absolutely every job you might need to do. Then assign cost for parts and time for you labour. I know you're doing this for fun, but it is still useful to know how much of your time will be consumed. And remember as you try to save cost, by refurbishing the existing, this cost you more of your time:

eg: buy recon starter motor and fit say £80 and 1/2hr to fit it
strip your starter motor, fit brushes, rebuild and fit say £15 and 3hrs of your time

When you add all the tasks up, you'll get an idea of what you are getting into.

If you have already imagined all the above work and more and you want to do it, I hope you really enjoy the project. The Delta was a nice car.

    Best wishes,

    David.

Its really a case of going in with your head as well as your heart.

I did this with a Lotus. I paid £1200, spent £1300 on it then gave up as it still had so much wrong with it. I ended up selling it for £500 3 years later:(.

    Jason,

Ahh... now I feel kind of guilty for putting you off the idea. Still, save the money you would have spent and put it into a fighting fund for something better... whatever that happens to be.

    Good luck.
