With the engine showing signs of increased crankcase pressure with bloei, we found that the breather hose attaches to an inverted flight slip valve on top of the case. The sliding valve inside appeared to be up and in the closed position from grime. The propellor was taken off and found to need a new rear seal and a new blade seal that had blown out from the case over pressure. Hope to hang the prop and fly next week. will plan on Fredricksberg, Gillespie county for lunch
Well, the prop was hung on Thursday and on Friday N8089H and I slipped the surly bonds and she and I were alone in the firmament. Of course the poetry ended when a damn 172 cut in front of me while I was on short final and when I went around and called final again some other damn plane took the runway in front of me and took off with me on final. Small airports - oh, the humanity.
SNJ5, I can recall in your discussion on your T-28 purchase something to the point that the A with 800HP does not require any endorsement beyon high performance and of course complex. For my future education what FAR speeks to that issue.
Cliff, I am pretty sure an A model could take off with ok margins with some flaps on 3000' of good sod, but you would really have to watch density altitude. Landing is absolutely no problem, even with my huge personal safety margins. I would not base it at a 3000 ft sod runway in Denver. I'll get in the manual today and look up the exact numbers. If I was confined to or did most of my flying off of 3000' of sod, I'd look at a T-6 again, which would be absolutely easy.
Russ, Thanks for your prompt reply. Just sold the T-6. I just talked to Mark Clark and his problem off sod was the weight on the nose gear. I am not sure this would be a problem for the A model.I have run the numbers from the AF handbook and using high density altitudes , no wind, 7000 lb. gross,This one has all the old stuff out and of course the 3 blade prop which should help.adding 20% for sod I still can't come up with more than 2100 feet. Trade-a-plane says 1320 to clear 50 foot obstacle. Plus 20% is 1570. Thanks for your thoughts. Do you like the machine?Cliff
It sounds like your book is the same as mine, remembering that the chart numbers are hard surface. I really like my plane. I had a T-6 before, and the T-28 is just so much smoother and faster, even the A model. I was dead set on getting another SNJ until I flew this one and did the math on fuel consumption - the A model gets the same mpg as the jbird. Now, the BCD models are qite different in climb out and power, but even though they are burning 20 (!) more gallons than an A at cruise, the speed difference is only 10 - 15 knots or so. I know a guy who had one of each, and said apart from the climb, they fly alike except the A feels lighter. Fly one if you haven't - you will be amazed.. and I am a devout T6 guy! Bump. Any news? Thought of you today as I was tooling around San Antonio in the T-28.
