Hopefully someone can give me a bit of direction on this one. This past week I replaced the little micro lights for the center consol switches. Since one was burned out, I decided to replace all of them. Now when the ignition key is in the on position, the radiator fans are running. They run all the time now while driving, but not when the ignition is in the off position. I disconnected the thermoswitch lead at the radiator and both remained on. Also, disconnected the leads at the expansion tank and the fans remained on. I can only guess I did something to the center console switches, but they all seem to work as usual.

    Any ideas?

Off the top of my head, the only thing that I can think of in the console area that would trigger the fans would be the AC controls, ie. the fans(or one fan) would run as long as the AC is on.

Not on a 328 (it has a separate cooling fan for the AC condensor, which is not mounted on the water radiator, so there's no intended operational connection between what the AC system is doing and the water fans).

When you say "I disconnected the thermoswitch lead at the radiator", did you just disconnect the N (black wire), or just the GV (yellow/green) wire, or both?

    Yellow/green wire.

Just disconnected both and the fans stay on.

Umm on the 328's I've seen the operation of the A/C will cycle the rad fans on at max, even the mondis' will cycle the rad fan on in the MAX position.

Can't agree Scott as the US 328 wiring diagrams show the only thing connected to, and controlling, the water fan relays is the thermoswitch mounted in the water radiator bottom tank -- are you sure it's not the AC condensor fan that you note as coming "on" with AC operation?

And same question for you Johnny, your original post wasn't specific and said "the radiator fans are running" -- do you mean "the water radiator fans are running" or "the AC condensor/radiator fan is running"?

If it is the water radiator fans that are running, wouldn't hurt to just remove the 2 relays and confirm that that shuts the water radiator fans off -- but I'd say that it would be highly unlikely that both relays would fail simultaneously stuck in the "on" position.

Yes, both radiator (water) fans, not the AC fan. I can try and pull the relays, but they are in a tight position. I agree that it would be very strange that both relays would fail at the exact same time.

Truly bizarre. I know it can be a b*tch to get a relay out (especially the first one) -- I often use a pair of combination pliers (opened up to the large position) on the outer case -- but it might give you some other information. If you just gently touch the male tabs to the female sockets, you might be able to detect if the relay is being actuating to the "on" position, rather than being stuck in the "on" position.

the diagram I have shows that one fan is controlled also by the A/C relay, the '85 328 I just worked on with re-charging the A/C did just that, switch the A/C to max settings and the rad fan will kick on. I'm going to assume that it was designed that way for load of the compressor getting the engine hotter.

personally I got fed up with the 'iffy' relay/fuse box and just wired the fan direct to the bat with a inline fuse and the ground direct to the bat as well. now the fan will run after shut down for 10~20secs. eventually I'll get around to fabing in the mezier pump.

    A 1985 308QV -- agree completely -- that's the way it works. If you worked on a 1985 328, it's the only one in the US ;)

My A/C is not giving cold air, I assume the gas leaked out. If that is the case would the Right hand radiator fan still come on when I turn on the A/C?
    I have a 1989 328.
