Got anything planned for wednesday boyz? If the CERN brain trust have it wrong the big bang might be bigger than they thought. Scientists plan to smash particle beams together at close to the speed of light inside CERN's tightly-sealed Large Hadron Collider to create multiple mini-versions of the primeval Big Bang, which occurred about 13.7 billion years ago and led to formation of stars, planets -- and eventually to life on earth. CERN scientists insist that while the collider is capable of creating black holes, they would be miniscule and incapable of growing. "Each collision of a pair of protons in the LHC will release an amount of energy comparable to that of two colliding mosquitoes, so any black hole produced would be much smaller than those known to astrophysicists." Always assuming no one lost a decimal point. "Gee Ugene wouldn't it be cool to make a black hole in Switzerland"
I'm not too worried. Here's a pic and link to write-up on a previous collision involving two protons: http://zewt.blogspot.com/2007/05/feeling-sleepy.html Image Unavailable, Please Login
But some believe some bloke went pooft and we are all here so perhaps the big bang didn't happen and therfore nothing to be concerned about. BTW I better clarify I'm an Atheist. This thread may be one for the P&R section.
It's actually next month. Tomorrow is just a test. It be funny if they don't find anything tho, a great way to spend $6bill
The LHC is 10 times larger than any previous particle accelerator, we've been smashing atoms for decades now. It is a little known fact that thus far in such experiments, the results have not been consistent with some of the fundamental "laws" (theories) of physics, such as e=mc^2. Common theory is that the collisions created have not been large enough to accurately reflect what happens in real life and that the LHC will finally prove these basic theorems to be true. We used to believe the world was flat. That the earth was the centre of the universe. Maybe we are about to find out that some of the basic tennets that we see as "facts" are about to be turned on their head. This may all seem a little cereberal, but think about it, the basic laws of quantum physics have never been proven and the experiments so far have not only been inconclusive, they have actually pointed to the laws being incorrect. We are about to put this to rest once and for all and maybe discover that we don't know **** after all.......
Well you're not a very good one, wanting my little bit of science self censored and cast into the nether world of politics and religion. Good god man, the fact Janis Joplin never owned a Mercedes-Benz is proof there is no god.
Newton was wrong, their is no gravity, the earth just sucks .... for every action their is NOT an equal and opposite reaction , if you hit my car I go ballistic and when your wife says 'no' she means 'forever'
