Although I have been reading and following FerrariChat for quite a while, at long last, I have joined the community of F-car owners. I took delivery of my beautiful new F430 coupe recently. Pictures to follow. However, I have a question. I live in a state which requires license plates on the FRONT and the rear of cars registered in the state. The rear license plate is no problem. What do I do about the front license plate? State law requires it, there is no place for it, and although the dealer said they would drill holes to install a front license plate, they were clearly very reluctant to do so. Naturally, so am I. Does anyone have a suggestion to resolve this problem? Many thanks for any help, and congratulations on a really informative and interesting site.

Maybe you can get a sticker as license plate?

    Which state?

Here in CA for example, the rules also say you need a front plate, but I've never heard of anyone being busted for not having one. Someone here made up a really fugly bracket that, from memory, was in two pieces with a "female" receptacle inside one of the front intakes with a male that simply plugged in. The idea was that when he got a "fix-it" ticket for not having it (in Virginia maybe?) he plugged it in, cleared the ticket, and took it back off...... A search here should probably find it.

    YMMV of course,
    Cheers,
    Ian

My state, Virginia, requires the front plate and I have never installed it on my 360 or E60 M5. I have been stopped 3 times in the 360 and never issued a ticket. I politely explain that there is no bracket for one and that it came from the dealer this way. I also keep the plate in the front trunk if they need it for inspection. I have decided I would rather pay the $50 fine than mount the plate.

Don't drill the holes! Good luck!

The kit from moweraxle works great. I helped with the development (meaning I put several different prototypes on my car as we worked out the stand-off dimensions, etc.) and am very pleased with the results. It's a really nice kit and is very easy to install and remove for washing the car, track days, or whatever.

The F430 in the pictures on his website is mine. The kit really doesn't look bad once it's on the car.

BTW, I don't get a kick-back or anything else on this products and I paid full price for the kit myself. I just happen to think that Larry is a really nice guy to deal with and is making a nice product.

I used velcro and put mine in the middle of the front bumper. This allows it to be removed if needed and does not require drilling.

I received a ticket for this last month in San Jose, CA. I guess the cop had nothing better to be doing at 10AM on a Sunday. It is a $10 fine and I will take some tape and stick the front plate on and have my neighbor who is a CHP sign off the fix it ticket. Then I will go back to my garage and take it off until I get another ticket.

I recieved a ticket for not having one. While he was at it, he gave me a second ticket for having a clear plastic cover over the rear plate!

I haven't been pulled over for this yet. But if/when I do. I'll pay the fine. The end.

Welcome to Fchat and congratulations on your F430.

Do not drill holes in your bumper. I have a front plate on both cars and use Velcro for fixing the plates to the bumper........works great and is very strong.

What's wrong with using double sided sticky pads?

We use them on a hell of a lot of cars over here & are easily removed with a bit of heat if need be without damaging the bumper.

I was thinking the same thing. Basically you can use some small squares of emblem/badge adhesive strips (sold at most automotive outfits). I've used this on my homemade under-bumper scrape guards and the stuff is strong as hell. My guards have never fallen off even after seeing some pretty good hits.

Oh ****!..... That's the first time I've heard of that around here. Bummer! Do you mind me asking where in SJ he got you? Did he stop you for that reason?

Hopefully this is not a sign of "things to come"......

Same for me, too. Cop's are a blessing and a curse.

My new Vette (Someday I'll have an F430) actually came with a front plate, but was only held on by some type of soft glue, thank god. Therefore, I pulled the ugly thing right off. I've also been pulled over for having tint on my driver/passanger windows too, but that's what the nextdoor neighbor is for. I guess its against the law to have a cool looking car in California.

PS I've never been pulled over for not having a front plate in over 2 years. It's always been for tinted windows.

He got me on 4th street near San Jose State college about 3 blocks before the on-ramp for 280 North. The first words out of his mouth were "The reason I am pulling you over is for no front license plate". In 30yrs of owning cars in CA I have only had 3 tickets for no front license plate. The other two were after being pulled over for speeding.

    Sticky tac.
You know... the blue gum-like substance that you used in grade 7 to put up posters in your school cafeteria?

Get ticket, tac on licence plate in front of police station, get ticket removed, take off plate, rub off any residue from sticky-tac with a soft cloth and water.

    presto.

Hi, I live in NJ and have the same problem. I use heavy duty velcro...the plastic type, not cloth. The same stuff they use on the easy pass for windshields. I get it at Radio Shack. Clean the front of the car with alcohol swab and apply. I have a 360 Modena F1 with 28,000 miles and it works great. You can pull it off when you don't want it any more. Believe me, it will not fly off at any speed.

Welcome to Fchat and congrats on your car. You might try filling out your profile so we know where the hell you live, unless you're some kind of spy or something.

Great ideas here. I'm too lazy and just pay the fine--it's a non-moving violation and does not count against you for insurance purposes. Also, only Troopers really care about this, but once in awhile you'll get a bored cop who wants to look at your car. Be super polite and you may probably walk---I have twice. Once I had to pay. Big deal!

FWIW, I like the velcro, unless of course it flies off the car at 80. Oh well, now you don't have to worry about it anymore.

My father took delivery of his 360 Spider at the factory in Maranello and will be doing so again this May for his F430 Spider. After the unveiling and run through with the guys at the factory he was preparing to be on his way, when they told him they needed to attach the plates. We live in Florida so no front plate was necessary so when the tech asked my father if he wanted it drilled and screwed on my father replied "Not if you want to keep your hand" a joke of course. They glued the plate on the front and back and assured my father that our dealer would be able to get it off with out damage. The really funny thing about this is that now 4 year later my father has never taken the thin Italian plates off the front OR the back. He has even been pulled over and no cop has ever said anything. He has the real plate behind his seat and scuffed it up a bit so if ever anyone said anything he would say it flew off and was waiting on parts from Italy to get it re-attached! Its amazing what you can get away with in a Ferrari!
