FIA CLARIFIES CHICANE CUTTING RULES (not a joke thread)

Just to add complexity to this mysterious subject... If a driver gains advantage from cutting the chicane whilst trying to overtake, surely the same is true if he cut the chicane whilst not trying to overtake (as is proven at various venues if you compare lap times for a driver that cuts vs doesn't cut the corner). Hence, what penalty should be enforced for those who cut the chicane whilst not overtaking? If there is no satisfactory answer to this question, then the law is clearly unfair to those who try and race vs those who just can't drive.

 

The rule as it is written describes ONLY the situation where a driver gains a position when cutting a corner, (any corner, not just a chicane) no matter the reason. The premise being that a gained advantage is one when a driver makes a pass. If only time is made up on the track, then there is no advantage. The rule was only designed to prevent a driver from making a pass on another driver by cutting a corner, (thereby taking a short-cut). There would be no way to manage a time advantage, and this has never been scrutinized in any race I have seen.
