I remember playing GPL when it came out. I played it with the speakers full on..and i was so happy when i managed to do one lap without spinning or crashing...Good days.

the king of ALL racing sims.. GRAN TURSIMO 5 **WILL** have ferrari's, new and old.. and as far as REALISM for driving.. and if you want to match how the cars really drove.. THIS is the ONLY game that does it justice.. it's an amazing game that DOES make me better on the track..

there is a new game for the ps3 called "ferrari challenge blah blah" is out now but revues not so good.

Sorry, but GT5 is far from being a real sim. GTR(2)/GTL/rFactor are a lot better in terms of realism.

How so? I was thinking seriously of GT5, which I thought was considered the most realistic of all sims (what I read).

There have been lengthy discussions about the subject, if you want to dig deeper, your best source is the forum at racesimcentral.com ! Some of the people there are a bit too serious about the matter, but the consensus (and my experience) is that GT5 has too much arcade influences to suit the needs of the casual gamer. I'd seriously recommend getting one of the sims mentioned before instead! The reason for all the articles in gaming magazines stating that GT5 is so realistic is that they're looking at it from a gaming point of view, not as a sim. It may very well be the most realistic piece of racing you can get for a Playstation or Xbox, but there's software for the computer that beats GT5.

Test Drive Unlimited is about as good as it gets. Get it for the PC if you can.

That's very clear Farout, thank you.

I unfortunately am on a MAC, so GPL, rfactor, and GTR(2) are out. As a result, I think I am going to have to go for a console game. Classic Ferrari availability is an important requirement; so GT5 for PS3 or Forza for Xbox? Would those be the two top console games?

Of course, the best seat/pedal/steering wheel product is going to have to accompany it, and that is my next question.

Thank you all for your advice and opinions. For years I have been wanting to get a good sim, and I think this thread is finally going to make me do it!

You're welcome, Julio! If you're really planning on buying a complete racing rig and getting a bit more serious about it, spend a few 100 more and buy a computer. Buying fancy equipment and then using it with arcade games designed to be played with the standard console controller is money thrown out of the window. All those sims don't need that sophisticated hardware to run and look good, the so called 'engines' (-> the internal code for displaying graphics etc) they're based on are several years old. If you don't want to buy an additional monitor, you can use the one of your Mac or your TV.
Speaking of wheel/pedals, there's no way around the Logitech G25 (~200€). There's hand-made heavy duty stuff for four times that price out there, but the G25 really offers all you need in high quality.

As someone slightly over 35 and with little time, I'd caution non-gamers against buying the game that only has the most vintage F-cars. Some of the driving games available are exceptionally realistic but require ridiculous amount of time to enjoy (Granturismo, etc.). Others are less real but instantly fun to use (Need For Speed, etc.). The bottom line is driving: If you love it in a video game, consider choosing according to game play rather than cars.

That said, I've seen a lot of commercials for "Ferrari Challenge" lately and noticed it's available for my increasingly dusty PS2. I see the reviews aren't great but has anyone here played it yet?

To those who declared that game dead - that screenshot is new, wasn't there a few days ago! And they obviously brought the Nürburgring to the game!

Rfactor is a great racing simulation for PC only. on the website rfactorcentral.com there are most (if not all) rfactor related downloads. About 100 (real) racetracks to download, and a similar amount of cars (race cars, rally cars, openwheelers etc). the game is very realistic, in car camera's etc. as for vintage ferrari', i'm afraid that at the moment only the 288 gto is available ( in race & road trim). but that isnt such a bad thing now is it;). also old F1 ferrari's :).

if you do not seek ultimate realism but like beautiful crafted cars, test drive unlimited is a very good game, but you need a fairly good pc to play it (atleast 1 gig ram, a good videocard [nvidia 7600GT is bare minimum, i'd suggest getting something like a 7950gt if you're on a budget, i supppose you can get them for under 80US right now] and 2.8 ghz P4. thats the specs of my pc when i first got the game and i was able to play it on 1024x768 and medium graphics. even so the game looked good. Any pc bought in the last year or newer will be as good as or better specs than mine though.

as for steering wheel, i recommend the logitech G25. it has a 6 speed shifter and pedals with clutch also. there's another similar sort of wheel out, also with 6speed shifter and clutch pedal, but with porsche emblems on it and made by fanatec. some users have said that they find the shifter for the porsche wheel more robust than the G25 one. I find nothing wrong with mine though and it gets used hard. and personally i've never found fanatec products as good as logitech.

sorry for the spelling, im on the laptop with a keyboard i cant get used to!
