You guys are right. But here in Canada the market is very very different. It's very small. Very few people we can deal with and count on. Luckily the older cars can be bought and taken away from the US market! :D

If you have cash, this is the time for fun. There are tons of cars just sitting in the US. Your nutty Canadian dealer will have some really cold winters, even for Canada.

Truth is, it's a buyers market. I know it's tough, but keep looking for a clean car with PPI 'allowed'. OR...negotiate a price accounting for at least some big % of a major repair. If they won't let it go for that, fine, buy another one.

Take your money elsewhere and purchase from someone that isn't afraid to reveal the true condition of the vehicle.

    Sounds like con-man BS!

If they won't stand behind it (and I'd be surprised if they did, based on the 'tude) then pass.

This was my thought. Anytime you get an answer like this they're just out there looking for a mark. Call them up and reference this thread and see how they react to the bad PR and transparent M.O.

This is straight from the Con Artists' Handbook. I've dealt with a few (to my detriment, lesson learned), and this kind of "sales pitch" will now get me out the door faster than almost anything else.

    Yup.

RUN, don't walk, away from this dealer. A heads-up for the community would be appreciated, too.

He knows what he is talking about and has been around these cars for 30+ years. Your best bet is to get somebody that knows what they are doing and that is friendly with them and will let him do an inspection or at least get more information. Don't buy the car first and then hope for the best! Like Brian said the PPI could help you negotiate a better price. The UCDA database is a good place to start once you get a VIN. Check the history and how many owners. I think you could also go here for information in Ontario and order the Used Vehicle Information Package kit for $25 - https://www.soetrans.serviceontario.ca/MTOWebChannel/?lang=en

On another note I was at the dealership last week (picking up a part for my car) and thought to myself - Have you ever seen so many older cars at FoO? I have never seen them advertise 6 older cars at once and they even have them in the showroom! They must have run out of cars to sell or things are getting tough and Remo is getting desperate. Either way he does have a new multi-million dollar dealership to open and pay for. Perhaps that is why it is 3 months past the closing date and still nowhere close to being finished. The market is getting softer and your choices will grow. Tread lightly and be aware of what you are getting into. You can blow $30K easily on a TR fixing multiple common issues without fail, as you can with any Fcar! Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I think you guys are being too harsh. If all they'll allow is a cursory visual inspection, then all I would pay is what a cursory visual inspection can confirm -- $30K if all the parts are there ;)

These days, there is almost no difference in the value of the dollars. That is why US cars are so attractive to Canadian buyers.
