I know nothing about wheels. Seems ironic that I just did a valve job and belt change myself and couldn't tell you what kind of wheels are on my car. So, can the experts here tell me: What are the wheel specs on an '89 328 (convex edition). Mag? Clearcoat? Powdercoat? I just want to clean the darn things (completely, both sides), but I don't want to damage them with some of today's harsh wheel cleaners.

They're normal painted alloy wheels, similar to BMW, Porsche and Mercedes.

I use Griot's wheel cleaner and a sponge.

I thought I read somewhere that the convex wheels were different than the concave wheels. Is that incorrect?

So if I want to refinish my wheels to like new condition. All I have to do is repaint them? Or is there more to it then that?

I use Eagle One. I think it's called all wheel cleaner or multiwheel cleaner or something. Comes in a silver colored spray bottle. Works very well. Scrub with a soft bush, hose off. Not expensive and easy to get (you neighborhood Kragen).

Just don't get the Eagle One Mag Cleaner. It will eat the paint, since it is made for bare metal. The All Wheel cleaner is the one you want. A little Simple Green also works great. I wax mine once a year, too.
