Tremendous loss....one of the greats of all time.
A favorite Paul Newman story. (CAVEAT - this is from memory and was recounted to me third or fourth hand, so details may be incorrect). Paul Newman stopped by an ice cream store in Connecticut. Naturally, it causes quite a stir. One woman was so flustered she quickly stepped out of the store, forgetting her change on the counter. Paul Newman went out after her. Newman: "Excuse me madam, you forgot your change." Woman: "Thank you Mr. Newman, you are so kind. Gosh I was so star-struck I must have also forgotten my ice-cream cone." Newman: "No, m'am. You put it in your purse."
I had the great pleasure of chatting with him when I was a kid, at Laguna Seca no less. It was a lesson in conducting oneself with dignity and class. He wasn't the slightest bit patronizing or carry any airs. Just a nice guy, talking shop with a young enthusiast. I'll never forget it.
i watched the mckee wedge in action this weekend. paul newman's name on the side made me sad but in the end brought a smile. this was his movie car in "winning". my connection to him was as a driver but my admiration for him was a result of he being such a humanitarian. r.i.p. pln. you are missed and never to be replaced nor forgotten. pcb
I feel lucky to have seen him from his early racing days in the Datsuns, in SCCA, on into IMSA. He was always a class act. he was like a regular guy. Easy to talk to when you might run into him in the paddock. He will be missed! RIP, PLN !!!
