He didn't have a parachute according to press releases. It just so happens he learned that 3 seconds after he jumped out of the plane.

Was he by himself? I thought in the original news report they mentioned something about his son being with him. Maybe I'm thinking of someone else?

It could be possible the ID and money was thrown from the plane as it hit. But that would depend on where it was found in relation to the crash site. Didn't the initial report yesterday say the ID and cash were found just inside a cave?

    Very interesting.

Indeed - at last when it looks like the mystery was about to be solved - it just seems to get deeper. Agree that most likely scenario would be that he survived and tried to walk back to civilization: except that this in itself leaves more questions...

Why leave your stuff in the cave? Was the crash really survivable? Why does an experienced aviator crash "head-on" into a mountain at 10,000 feet in a plane that can only climb to maybe 12,500 feet?

The local wildlife has had 13 months to pick the crash site clean. They will find remains, but probably not much.

    Steve was probably "recycled".

They also mentioned animals scavenging the remains. Not to get gross, but he could have been dragged away.

Or the clothing, which could have had the articles in a pocket or something. Not to get gross either, but the photos of that wreck that I saw in MSNEWS did not at all look like the accident was survivable.

I feel strongly that if he did not have a paracute and did not bail out, he must have been killed in that crash.

I still do not understand how he managed to fly that plane head on into the side of a mountain - unless a speculation that I am not willing to yet make could be true.

I'm not a pilot, but I would speculate either flying w/o instruments or possibly a heart attack at the helm.

I guess most of us who fly have lost at least one friend to an accident. We wish they were still here - but we sometimes have to accept the reality of what is.

I have to say that I am glad they finally found the resting place.

Something still seems fishy about this whole thing. I'd love to talk to someone who's in the know and been following this very closely and see what they have to say?

His wife said, ""I am hopeful that the DNA identification puts a definitive end to all of the speculation surrounding Steve's death."

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27523123

Speculation? Why's that cuz things don't add up when you look closely?

An experienced pilot vanishes initially, no beacon found or anything.(he wasn't wearing his Breitling beacon watch that day either ;) ) A huge man hunt to the tune of millions that included the Civil Air Patrol and they can't find the guy. Exactly 13 months later(1 year would have been too obvious) and some guy happens to stumble upon some ID and some cash in CA. Then magically his plane is discovered shortly after and it's quickly case closed nothing to see here, move on people there's football on TV you should be watching. Also, there's a couple of pics of some debris scattered around and that's supposed to convince everyone that he just smacked into a mountain and that's it? BTW, I'm not doubting the fact that they now have his DNA.

They also recovered Mr Fossett's tennis shoes and his Illinois driver's license, both with animal bite marks on them. Bite marks, why would an animal decide to bite shoes and plastic?

    http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Steve-Fossett-Remains-Identified-Adventurers-Bones-Recovered/Article/200811115141249?lpos=World_News_Carousel_Region_2&lid=ARTICLE_15141249_Steve_Fossett_Remains_Identified%3A_Adventurers_Bones_Recovered

Illinois driver's license? He lived in CO according to Wiki. "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Fossett" Why was he carrying an IL license? His CO one was completely destroyed so the IL had to do in a pinch?

Anyway, Steve know's what happened and he ain't telling.

It's still kind of like saying Tupac and Elvis are alive. I can't say anything about the Illinois driver license, but with the animal bite marks, maybe Fossett struggled with the animal. Again, I'm assuming so don't jump on me. But I had hope as well and I'm guessing they won't investigate further because they have "DNA".
