I know the major ABS and suspension modifications came in late 88 but as I'm in the market for an 86-88 GTS now I was wondering if there were any other mechanical/cosmetic differences in the 86-88 I should be aware of

There are many small mods done over the life of 328. Inside door handles got a redesign, the front bonnet went to a gas strut, the exterior door handles got a plastic bezel around the assembly, Ferrari shields on the side mirrors, a tie down strap for the tools in the trunk, different paint color on the spare, very late cars (Mid 11-88) had a trim liner on the inside surface of the front bonnet to match the one covering the bottom of the trunk area of the hood.

My favorite happens to be early 88. Before the convex wheels and after the gas strut.

The wheel/suspension/ABS mods are the only ones of any real difference so find the best one in your price range in the color you like and just accept the trivial stuff.

    No bad 328's were built.

Like Rifledriver said, there are no bad 328's made. Off the top of my head there were a couple of factory recalls for some minor stuff, plus a change to the spring/setting for the oil pump for better oil pressure, a change of valves, and a few other stuff I cant remember. All prettty minor stuff. If thinking of getting an early one, make sure the recalls have been done and that the oil pump spring has been upgraded.

There were a couple of recalls on the '86 328s, IIRC, including an updated/strengthened A-arm.

I like the '87-early '88 cars, pre-convex wheels. Most important thing is to find a good car.

Early in the '86 production the oil sump was updated with a deeper sump and suction pipe. '89 had a different steering wheel also.

(+1) No bad 328's were built.

The relief valve TSB was to lower oil pressure, not raise it. I seriously doubt any still exist unmodified. They blew up oil hoses and coolers with regularity.

In Dec. 86 there was a recall on the oil cooler lines which also included updating the oil pressure control plunger valve. Also a recall on the fuel rubber return hose was issued at the same time.

In Oct. '89 a recall was issued for the front lower suspension A-arm forks (stronger)

The 328 was a very good series in Ferrari's production history, Graet cars!

I had an 87, now an 89. I like the suspension update, but would not hesitate to buy a nice, well cared for car of any year.

The logo on the air filter cover on the '86 is different than '87-'89. Also, the surround around the cigarette lighter on the '86 is green, from '87-'89 it is orange.

    Regards,

    Josh
