Couldn't read your whole post but i get the idea. Nothing like putting down a dog. Truly man's best friend and the loss feels like a spear through your soul.

    Sorry to hear.

I know just how you feel, been there twice in my life and it isn't any easier anytime. This is the greatest poem in the world about loosing a pet that you love so much:

    "Beau"
    by Jimmy Stewart
He never came to me when I would call
Unless I had a tennis ball,
    Or he felt like it,
But mostly he didn't come at all.

    When he was young
    He never learned to heel
    Or sit or stay,
    He did things his way.

    Discipline was not his bag
But when you were with him things sure didn't drag.
He'd dig up a rosebush just to spite me,
And when I'd grab him, he'd turn and bite me.

He bit lots of folks from day to day,
The delivery boy was his favorite prey.
The gas man wouldn't read our meter,
He said we owned a real man-eater.

He set the house on fire
But the story's long to tell.
Suffice it to say that he survived
And the house survived as well.

On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,
He was always first out the door.
The Old One and I brought up the rear
    Because our bones were sore.

He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on,
What a beautiful pair they were!
And if it was still light and the tourists were out,
They created a bit of a stir.

But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks
And with a frown on his face look around.
It was just to make sure that the Old One was there
And would follow him where he was bound.

We are early-to-bedders at our house--
I guess I'm the first to retire.
And as I'd leave the room he'd look at me
And get up from his place by the fire.

He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs,
And I'd give him one for a while.
He would push it under the bed with his nose
And I'd fish it out with a smile.

    And before very long
    He'd tire of the ball
And be asleep in his corner
    In no time at all.

And there were nights when I'd feel him
    Climb upon our bed
    And lie between us,
    And I'd pat his head.

And there were nights when I'd feel this stare
And I'd wake up and he'd be sitting there
And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair.
And sometimes I'd feel him sigh
and I think I know the reason why.

He would wake up at night
And he would have this fear
Of the dark, of life, of lots of things,
And he'd be glad to have me near.

    And now he's dead.
And there are nights when I think I feel him
Climb upon our bed and lie between us,
    And I pat his head.

And there are nights when I think
    I feel that stare
And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair,
    But he's not there.

Oh, how I wish that wasn't so,
I'll always love a dog named Beau.

Thanks, guys. It's been pretty tough on my fiancee. She just called from work sobbing. I actually feel worse for her and Max than I do for Onyx.

Onyx was probably 13 or 14.

The vet said she was having strokes.

Sorry to hear. I think dogs in general are really scared of the thunder because of their sensitive hearing. It is smart to euthanize them so they don't suffer in pain for prolonged periods. We have a sheltie that is 8 or 9 years old. Are you planning on getting a puppy anytime soon? We think when our dog is gone that will be it, and no replacement.

Doing the pink shot dirty deed at the vet's office rips your soul out.

I recently took a portrait of our new hospital chaplain & he was so pleased w/ the shots he wanted copies on a CD. He asked if there was anything he could do to repay me. I said, “Tell me my cat that I just had put to sleep is in Heaven.” He said, ”Of course she is. We are all God’s creatures. You’ll see her on the other side.”

Loosing a pet is always hard. When Gable (see my avitar) was on his way out I decided to give him a little taste of heaven on earth. Every week I would buy a bag of assorted doughnuts, and let him have as much as he wanted. I changed his diet to Beef Ravioli's and Spaghetti O's. Soon he got a new lease on life and stuck around for the treats a couple of months. The cancer was terminal however.

Thanks so much for your well wishes. I am going to copy and paste this for Ms Future Remix so she feels better. I just got home and she was still crying.

It's tougher than I thought it would be. :(

Onyx had a partner, Max. They grew up together. I was told today Ms. Remix came home and Max went to the back door and stared at it for a while like he thought someone else was with her. He never does that. I think he is starting to realize she is gone. :(

    Sad for Max now.

    Don't laugh - I say 'more painful'.

All of us break down at the loss of innocent children, and pets.

Because neither can communicate what is wrong, we have to trust what a Dr. or DVM think is wrong, we sit with our hands tied, praying.

It's now coming up on 2 years since we lost one of our cats, and I still get teary thinking about him... it's normal, they ARE a part of our family, they depend on us for food, shelter, medical care just as a child does.

Best thing you can do is 'rescue' another pet and welcome it into your home, they will love you for it.

Poor Onyx! I'm so sorry to hear about your doggie! It's never easy when they go even if you know it's their time.

And not only am I sorry to hear about your girl, but this freaked me out a little when I first read it because my name is Gretchen.

Damn that's sad RMX, very sorry to hear stories like this. I was at Pets Mart yesterday and they had an animal rescue group there that was trying to adopt out a litter that someone left on their doorstep. I didn't know it was "adoption day" or I wouldn't have went there w/ my 11 & 14 yr old daughters! They literally begged me to let them have one, so I caved as I always do to them. We named her Cleo and her mom was a coon hound but no idea what the dad was, but she sure is cute. Here is a pic that I hope cheers you up a bit. Hang in there buddy!

Man is that a cute dog! Looks like she has a good home with you guys.

Miss RMX was a wreck again Saturday morning. Onyx used to accompany her poolside in the mornings for coffee. She would sip her coffee and brush Onyx and talk to her. Max doesn't care much to hang out outside. I watched her curl up in a ball and just sob. "I hope Onyx knew I loved her..." She did I'm sure! God, that's hard to hear and watch because I cannot do anything to make her feel better.

But...Miss RMX was better Sunday and this morning, too. The vet will call about us picking up the ashes in a day or two. It's going to be tough again when that happens.
