    Q. Ever wonder what happens to a 308 GTS when a 2007 Chevy 4x4 backs up onto your car, and stops 6" from your windshield?

    This.....

Happened today at 12:39 pm near Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, California.

Got on the phone to Gary Bobileff immediately. The car is with them now. At least the guy has decent insurance. Gary said it would between $25,000 and $30,000 to repair.

    Can you feel my pain?

    Dan

I would imagine they would total at that price.
Least as you said he/she is insured... could be alot worse, least car can be replaced..
    Good Luck & sorry!

Gary said he would be suprised if they did total it out. It is a 1978, last year for the carb model. The car has been completly redone throughout. We will see. Hopefully they will get an adjustor over by early next week.

I was on a side street following a late model Chevy 4x4. The 4x4 was ahead of me and came to a stop sign. I stopped about three feet behind him. After he stopped he appeared to begin to turn right onto another street. All of the sudden his back up lights came on and he begin backing up. I hit my horn but by this time he was on top of my car. His rear plates stopped about 6" from my windshield. After he got out and saw the damage he said he didn't see me back there. I have no idea why he decided to back up. He is a Sgt at MCRD (Marine Corps Recruit Depot).

Holy Cow! Now that scares the hell out of me. Did the car climb on top of your car (where his rear wheel off the ground when he stopped?)? Did Gary say if he was going to repair/weld/reshape the torn bits, or replace them with new/used stamped fenders, etc.?

    I really feel for you.

People are iDiots but I see a DOD sticker on your car as well so you shouldnt be suprised

doesnt matter if he is a Sgt at MCRD or a Major from Mirimar idiots are all over the place and it only takes a cutting score for one to pick up sargeant, and a pulse to pick up major you were not hurt thats what matters.

$25k to $30k is about right. I had a 78 308GTS in equally prestine condition, with nice QV wheels, and fresh service. Had what I would estimate as less damage than that, and Chubb totalled it. I spoke in detail with the adjuster and he said Chubb would only use new parts, and that was the rub...new bumpers are mega bucks. Like you, I needed a new front clip, etc. (at least your hood looks in good shape) The bill (and this was 6 years ago) ran 19k+, and the best value they could put on the car back then, was around 29k, even though I had an "agreed policy" of 37k. So, they cut me a check for $37k. Someone bought the car at auction, and of course fixed it themselves for much less, by repairing the bumper, and most of the other parts, without replacing them. I never saw the car again, but heard it looked fine. I doubt it would have met my standard without new parts.

If they try to total it, you will likely need an attorney to prove the cars worth, and get a decent settlement. Consider it an opportunity for an upgrade...that's what I did, and got a really nice condition 87 328GTS! ;)

Daniel, believe me I feel your pain, so sorry. This is the kind of stuff that makes my blood boil but I'm glad you're ok.

I know it happen kind of sudden but, is it not possible for you to back up on time?

I say that Sgt. need to be Dishonorably Discharge for his driving conduct, it could have been alot worse.

I just hope his not going to turn around and say you rear ended him specially after he finds out the cost of damage.

Yep, the 4x4's wheels were off the ground. Actually had my wheel-wells pressing against the tires. Gary did say it would need a new clip, but anything can be fixed, it just needs to be done right to keep the value of the car. He was insured by USAA, talked with the agent for about an hour and half today processing the claim. They will send an adjuster over to talk with Gary Bobileff and work out the value. I will decide how to proceed after we settle on the claim. Gary did say he could work with what we have but I would rather have either new/used stamped fenders. This may be a good opportunity to upgrade. I'll keep everyone posted.

The sticker is from Miramar because we live in San Diego but we are actually an USAF family.

Putting the car in reverse quickly entered my mind, but then I would have backed into the person behind me. At least this way I was the only one hit.

I did call his agent immediately and reported the accident. SDPD indicated they wouldn't come out for a non-injury accident. With the damage it will hard for him to claim that I run up under neath his truck. Tire tracks on the side of my fenders?

79 was the last year for carbs, so sorry for your loss of use of the car. glad you were not hurt, and that he was not hurt after! there was a good front end sheet metal piece on ferrari ads for a reasonable amount. i would buy the car from the insurance company if i were you, and fix it and then resell, or keep it and buy a 328 and have 2 of them.

I had the same thing happen to me at a stop sign in my VW. He didn't get on the hood, but what the hell are people doing stopping and then throwing it in reverse?!?

USAA is an excellent insurance company to covered by, as a customer they are the best. It will be interesting to see how they are from the other side.
This sucks. Be sure to get an attourney if they want to total it.

Get it fixed. The damage does not look that bad and for sure if Gary is doing the work you can be certain of a 100% repair with no loss in value to the vehicle. His work is quite outstanding.

I 'second' Nuvolari - its YOUR car. It needs bodywork, but if the frame is not bent this car is very repairable. I would make them repair it. There are front clips out there - many 308s have toasted from engine fires and are waiting to be donors for your car.

If you have drama and end up needing to unload 'er as is . . . give me a ring :). I could use another wrecked Ferrari for a track car . . well not really but you're local :)

    Cheers,

    Sean

edit: real bummer Dan but for $20-$25k in repairs she should be straighter than a new one :)

I had an SUV hit me at a stop light. Woman in front of me put her car into reverse when the light turned green and floored it. Nothing I could do as she hit me in my SL. Afterwards her excuse was "I was confused".

I know you luv that car Dan but I'll try and bait you one more time:

    1. $20k-$25k from insurance

    2. sell me car as is ... I don't care if she's a salvage title :)

    3. you can go buy a cherry 328 or another carbed car that's never been hit.

    you're getting very sleepy ;)

    cheers

edit: If the insurance pays you out I think that will go on car fax if you care about that. :)

Sorry to see that, but glad to hear nobody was hurt. It looks like the car can be fairly easily repaired. Take some pics of the repair process for records and to share with us!

As with everyone else, I'm sorry to hear of the misfortune. I'm also glad you are okay.

    << On my Soapbox >>

    - Sure, cars can be replaced but remember that these cars are getting fewer and fewer. In my opinion, repairs are preferable over salvage any day.
    - As far as 4x4s, they shouldn't be on the road if the driver can't see the car behind them, regardless of the size of the vehicle.

    << Off my Soapbox >>

Best of luck and post photos of the repair process, if possible, and certainly after the car is perfect again.
