Has anyone out there ever internationally shipped their 355 in a container? I'm planning to ship mine (via professional removal co) next month. While the car's in the container I'm not in the slightest bit worried. But getting it in and out the other end DOES worry me - mainly since I won't be there.
I've heard the space between the side of the car and the edge of the container is small - and that suggests horror stories for the door edges when the removal guy has just parked the car in the container, and is then trying to squeeze himself out ) - it's bad enough at the best of times!!) Those 355 doors are freakin big!
Any suggestions as to what I can do - any of you guys used any foam protectors etc? When I see brand new cars being delivered ex container to dealers I see what looks like polyurethane slabs stuck on prone parts.

I'm guessing somewhere here there must be advice about shipping cars but it sounds like the main one is going to be get very good insurance covering every stage & possibility

A fair percentage of our cars were shipped out from the factory.

I would insure it (obviously). I would have the shipper carry out a pre transport inspection of the body work of your car, If they are specialists in this type of thing you will not need to mention that as it is something they will do and have you sign off the form prior to taking the car.

If you want to be extra precautions I would use a soft covering to protect the door edges and any other parts you feel may be at risk.

You're right regarding foam pads on the sides and surrounds of cars shipped in a container from the factory. A good cladding of soft or padded protection over a cars' side and corner extremities (ie; mirrors) is not a bad idea. Interior dims of containers vary but count on a pessimistic 220 cm of width, many wide cars are shipped with a window down to assist ingress/egress.

Thanks guys - I had a detailer here for the car today and asked him the same question. He said layers of bubble wrap and masking tape were the best solution, right along the cars flanks with particularly emphasis on door and sill edges - plus leaving the window helpfully down for the removal guy! But believe me I'm aiming to fill a 2 gig memory stick at the shippers before I leave it!!
