owning italian bikes? Years ago when i had tired of your run of the mill hondas and the like and made the jump to Ducatis, I heard more than my share of "experts" say how big a mistake it was going to be. Ducatis are horrible, will leave you stranded on the road, put you in the poor house for repairs and parts (if I could get them). Turned a deaf ear and made the jump....and you know what? If given the required service and driven on a regular basis, the bikes were really no worse than anything else. Of course they had a little "character" but none of the horror stories told to me... Since then I've had Ducatis, MV's and Now an Aprilia RSV factory and they have all been wonderful machines. Was it like that with the cars? Thanks everyone. Awesome forum.

No problems with my Ducati 749s or Ferrari 328GTS. You just need to know where they are coming from. I bought the Duc new. I take care of it, it takes care of me. Bought the best condition 328 I could find. Will be many years of bliss I am sure.

    Owning a ferrari, is a love/hate relationship.

When it runs and performs like it is supposed too, you love it. When it's under the weather, you hate it.

Yet that is the spark that drives the relationship.

No matter if it's bikes, car, boats, etc.... toys of this nature are the wild untamed mistress of your dreams....

If a person is not ready to accept the occasional breakdown and stories that follow with said toys, they will only be happy with Hondas'

I suppose there are some similarities-- my Ducati spent a while in the shop waiting for parts when I first got it, just like a Ferrari. But overall, for me at least, the Ducati ownership experience has been quite painless. Easier than any Ferrari I've owned, for sure.

I dunno. My Ducati 916 was stout as an anvil.

The MV F-4, well, not so much.

Sounds like a familiar ownership story. I had the same thing, except I did not ask around first. If I had asked my friends, they both would have said not to buy it, etc... I'm glad I did not ask. It has been a 98% favorable experience.

This is the same with girlfriends too. And a reliable Honda would be... I have no idea.

the "ducati's leaving you stranded" statement typically comes from the person riding a r1 or gsx-r. they've never owned one and are the ones degrading ducati (or MV) because they aren't as fast and cost much more than their yamaha. (also the type of statement typically coming from the guy who loves doing 120 mph wheelies on the freeway).

ducati's (like ferrari), evoke beauty and have a rich past/heritage. the people riding ducati's feel like they're apart of something (check out a ducati meet if ones near you; the ones in my area are fantastic). its the same feeling (i'm sure) that you guys have with being involved with the ferrari community.

...and if a girl finds out you ride a ducati, you're more than likely a stud in her eyes. i doubt that happens often with the guy riding the paint splashed cbr :)

I had a Monster a few years back that did leave me stranded a few times, mostly because of an incompetent dealer here in the Lou (who no longer has his Ducati franchise). That experience wouldn't stop me from buying another, though. Beautiful bikes with a lot of soul, and massive street cred (from both men and women). I have a CBR now, hope to bump up to a Duc sportbike in the not too distant future.
