I just ordered new tires for my Mondi (348 wheels) from Tirerack. I would use my normal Ferrari mechanic but he doesn't do tires. There is a local guy who is very well regarded and very inexpensive. Is there any reason why I should send the car to a Ferrari specialist to mount and balance the tires. Looking at the car, it seems the jacking points are pretty easy to spot, as there are cut outs for them. Furthermore, I can't imagine there is any rocket science to a Ferrari wheel. Any reason why I shouldn't go to the local tire shop?

I use Discount Tires, they've been fine.

Provided he's careful (as he should be w.any wheel) and his changer protects the rim there's no reason not to use him.

I used Discount tire, their machines don't touch the rim, so no scratching.
I also brought them the wheels separately from the car, I don't want non-Ferrari mechanics, anywhere near my car.

    +1

I do the same (and remove the wheel caps myself before taking them in) -- that way they don't damage the lugbolts with an airgun or bend something on the chassis. Been very pleased with Discount Tire's work - no paint damage to the wheels, and they've been smart enough to know how to do a 2-plane dynamic balance without putting weights on the outside of the wheel (although maybe not all DT techs everywhere would know how to do that).

Mind elaborating on this Steve? Would like to know how to explain this if I find myself someplace where the techs don't know.

    Thx :)

    Joe,

I would also recommend a four-wheel alignment at this time.

Normally I would, but she had an alignment done a little while ago and Black Horse Garage did such a tremendous job setting the car up that I am afraid to mess with it!

BTW, You guys have made me really nervous about having my new tires installed anywhere but a specialist. The thought of chassis damage, etc makes me want to puke. Unfortunately, I can't take the wheels off and bring them to the shop like suggested. So I guess I will try and get on the calender at the Ferrari specialist.

It's a technique that works better on wheels with large positive offsets, because, the larger distance you can keep between the two planes where the weights are placed, the smaller the weights will be to introduce a given moment (when necessary). But mathematically, as long as the separation between the two planes is non-zero, it can still be correctly 2-plane balanced. The bigger problem is does the balancing machine have the capability to accept an inputted (random) value for the distance bewteen the planes (d1 or d2) in doing its calculations for the needed weights and does the technician have the know-how to input the distance ;).
