Belts are cold and bent and hardened in place around the pulleys. Once they heat up...a few seconds....the clicking goes away. Right?

This started happening on my car as well recently. It sounds like static electricity coming from the belts area.It only happens on first start up when the car is cold and lasts for around 30-40secs then it goes away.Anoter thing that I thought it could be is I welded a steel bung in the exhaust on the long pipe that comes from the front header to the exhaust. Its for the O2 sensor for my LM-1.The noise also sounds like metal expanding.I have't quite worked out what it is but coincidently it started making the noise after I welded the bung

My 83 308 has done this several times too. Since it is intermitten, I was alarmed and thought maybe a pulley/bearing was going bad on one of the cams or other drive pully. It does sound like it comes from the front (near fire wall) timing belt cover. I listened with a stethoscope. But it does go away after it warms up.

I would love to understand this better to be sure it's not serious. It has not happened in the last 10 or 15 starts.

Static discharge from the belts is a very real possibility. I was first made aware of it by Doc Fung back on the old Ferrarilist 100 years ago, and if you sift through Gates and Daytons website you can find reference to it. My understanding is it can be quite audible, even over a Tubi.

I see Im not the only one! Yes the clicking does go away, after a few minuites. Sometimes not until ive driven it for 30 seconds or so. It does seem to be getting worse now its got colder over here... When parked on a slope the sound is very like a colapsed bearing, which has been a worry for me for some time now...The crackling sound does disappear as soon as i move it onto level ground...It sounds like the oil hasnt worked its way around because of this... Heres hopeing!!! Is there any thing or way to lube or grease the pully wheels in there??? Even if its not doing any harm, i would still like it not to be there at all...Esp for peace of mind...A mechanic had mentioned that he had heard the spark leads on Ferraris sometimes make a sound which has led people to belive it was a belt issue...Thanks for the advise.........

+1, same here, & never reoccurs unless it sits overnight. I read somewhere on this site that belt lube cures it.

this mystery and it's fix was just explained to me by one of our resident gurus. seems the pulleys get some corrosion on them and when the belts are cold and stiff the pulleys grab at the belts and they snap until they warm up. the fix is to carefully take some sandpaper and while the motor is running clean the groove on the pulley.

Yup --- situation is normal on the older V8's that run the thin "plastic" v-belts.

When I first got my 308, I started it up one cold morning, and about had a heart attack! The belt snapping was so loud and sharp that I thought I had a broken valve spring or a dropped valve seat!

Once the engine warmed up --- the noise disappeared. I rushed the car over to my mechanic immediately, and he just starting laughing and explained to me what was happening.

It is defiently your belts. Mine drove me crazy for about 10 minutes with a cold start. I sprayed some belt dressing on the ac belt and it went away. After a while, i cut the belt off because I don't use the ac anyway and have not heard a thing..

Yeh think i will just have to live with it... I took the cover off and started it several times, just to make sure... I also rang the garage that last serviced her in 2007... It had a 18.750 mile service which includes belts... They reasured me that the tensioner bearings were replaced...

That fix is just about as crazy as the idea of cutting your cam belt in half with the engine running. I really hope nobody is thinking seriously about this idea. I get queezy just thinking about it. I once saw a guy with long hair get scalped by a belt sander. Not a pretty sight.

Have to resurrect this old thread here - had the same problem on my '88 mondial....a fairly loud clacking sound in the neighborhood of the AC pump belt. I just changed my belts and tensioner bearings so I knew it wasn't something in there. I replaced the AC pump belt et voila, noise gone. She runs and sounds just like she should.

Thank you to the posters above for pointing me in the right direction in solving this one!
