Ok, re: 78 400 automatic. Any problems pulling engine leaving the auto tranny behind......enough rom to pull engine away from shaft/bell housing? Possible to pull eng and tranny (don't think so) as a unit? I would be very thankful to hear from those who have done this before.

Needing to do timing chain, so it kinda kills me not to pull the motor and do all guides, tensioners, seals and gaskets. alternative is to wind in a chain as mentioned in earlier posts. Thanks

    Godspeed!

Most people pull the engine and leave the tranny.

    Just a couple of things:
    1. Remove the distributors before the engine and reinstall after the engine.
    2. Strap the engine from the sides. Its a lift and twist to get it to clear the frame and firewall.
    3. Don't forget to remove the dip stick tube for the trans oil.
    4. Be careful of the AC compressor when reinstalling. It sticks out more than you think.
    5. In or out, the more hands the better. I've done it alone and it's a challenge.

    Good luck with it.

And why do you need to change the timing chain?

    Mark,

Thanks for the tips. Chain is making noise, tensioner hex socket screw is all the way in. Factory recommends chain replacement at , I think, 30k miles. But...............I am going to pull the tensioner housing first to make sure the plastic disk has not gone south. Oh boy..............

    Godspeed!

    Dave,
not an easy job, plan on at least a day to prepare and a day to pull/replace the engine. We left the tranni in, mine is a 5 speed. When you have the "snowball" on the stand or table there are a lot of things to look at, along with the timing chains. Now is the time to look into everything with an exceptional fine tooth comb. Send me a PM when you have the chain rails out.
