What do you answer if someone asks you "I have about $85,000 to spend and I want to buy a Ferrari, my choices are a 1999 360 coupe F1 with 10k miles or a 1999 f355 F1 spider with 16k miles". Both cars are 1 owner with all services done and up to date. The 360 is red black the F355 is red tan. They are for sale by a Ferrari dealer they are not on EBay. Now, we here in the 348/355 are biased so let’s be honest about it. I would say that for the long run the F355 will be a better investment but this guy is going to drive the car so I don’t think that the investment part is his objective here.

As much as I love the 355, for the same money I would get a 360. :D:D

$85K for a 99 360 is awesome! We are still paying top dollar for our 360's here. :p:p

When I was Ferrari shopping in 2004-2005, my 348 cost me $115K. :):)

    A 355 cost $60K more and a 360 cost $150K more!! :D:D

Before everybody gets all 360 crazy, let me just say that I would take a well SORTED 355 over a low mileage 360. Just talked to a guy that had his 360 precats dissolve and get ingested back into the motor where they trashed a liner and other internal goodies. Required an engine-out rebuild. Listening in was a well known "insider" who will remain nameless who commented that he thought we were on the tip of the iceberg with 360s and issues.

The 355 has issues, they are well known, they are fixable. Get one that is solid and drive it. Plus, I find it very hard to get the top off of the 360 coupe :)

Given the Australian prices, it would make sense to get a couple of solid cars and ship them over to sell. Is there a difficult process involved or import tax? Has anyone ever done it?

    Nearly impossible LHD vs. RHD

    I would take a 355 over a 360, I actually had an option of getting a 360 for $8k more when I bought my F355.

Did you just convert the AUD to the USD using the current exchange rate?

Won't the prices be cheaper in the US if you list the US sale prices?

Or are you getting identical prices either way?

I seems pretty incredible that someone can own, insure/maintain a 360 for nine years, only put 10k miles on it then, sell it for half price  .......... does not make any sense IMO :(!!

    ......... what he said ...... ;)

The '99 355 is well sorted, many known issues were fixed at the factory. On the other hand the '99 360 was brand new...I don't know all the particulars on 360's though, potentially more issues with the first year production?

The 355 is gorgeous and much less common - consider the huge volume of 360's produced and all the follow on 430's look pretty much the same. That's a whole lotta jelly beans driving around :D

IMHO the scale tips slightly to the 355 given the same price - going forward they will likely appreciate in value sooner than the 360's, although don't hold your breath waiting for when that happens.

When I brought my first 355 there was a 360 available for exactly the same money, I choose the 355 as it was always a dream of mine and the 360 has a number of things i dislike. The style is something I struggle to warm up to. The interior is too big, I like my cars small and tight, the 355 is a great compromise between style and space, there is just enough room to be comfortable without loosing its small nimble feeling, a 360 feels like an open area, maybe there are safety reasons at play and also accommodating our larger brothers.

In the end it should be an easy decision, they are two fairly different cars, the 360 is more of a daily driver and the 355 is more exotic and a weekend warrior. If the buyer has no preference on the styling then a drive of both will make it clear on which they prefer. :)

Send em on down mate! :p:p

Can be done, but US cars will need to be coverted to RHD. Can be done. There was a recent red/black 355 GTS US import for sale here. I didnt see it in person, but apparently the conversion was average an Aussie Fchatter told me. I saw pics and it looked ok in pics. Car sold for around the AU $120K IIRC! CHEAPEST 355 I have ever seen for sale. We still have to pay Luxury Car Tax on import cars over AU $50K, then Gross Sales Tax on the whole amount followed by import tax. Tax really hits ya here. :(:(

Can be done, but yeah. :D:D

Yeah, they are Aussie cars for sale in Aussie dollars. I just converted it to US dollars so you boys can see what we are paying for them in your money. :):)
