I am unhappy to report that is from New Zealand. I have heard it was made from a burned out shell, so from that respect at least its still doing something. :)

The 288 GTO is an entirely different car than the 308.

I love the GTO and would be thrilled to have one, but it's not as pretty as the 308. It's wrong to "re-body" a 308 to resemble a 288 because it's an insult to both cars. The end result is not true to either.

Both the 308 and 288 are icons in their own right. It's wrong to turn any genuine Ferrari into a kit car, and the 308s made to resemble GTOs are shoddy impostors at best.

Of course I understand that the 288 GTO and the 308 are completely different models, and I was not implying that modifying a 308 with a kit would be prettier than a normal 308. My point was that, by their (and Pinninfarina's ) own admission, the 288 GTO styling was based upon the existing 308 series, and having said that, some could consider it a final culmination of the 308 styling. If someone were to agree with that, then I would say that the 288 GTO was the prettier incarnation of the 308 styling. However of course, this is all completely subjective. Some would argue that the 328 is the prettier between it and the 308. I dont agree, but its difficult to argue that its a completely different car, and not part of the comparison.
    Just my $.02!

The 328 is obviously an evolution of the 308. The GTO isn't.

While all cars share some visual similarities, I think that the 308 is the prettiest of them all. Guess I'm a purist.

I will have to respectfully agree to disagree. Mechanically, they are not close, but stylistically the GTO is clearly, and acknowledged by both Ferrari and Pinninfarina, as an evolution of the 308GTB.

Yeah and the NACA ducts on the front hood are going the wrong way I believe. Aren't they generally used as intake ducts and not as exit ducts.

Many Ferrari enthusiasts aren't familiar with the limited production (748 total) European 308 QV - which has quite different styling from the popular American 308 Spyder version.

Respectfully, both the 328 as well as the GTO are evolutions of the 308. The 328 looks more like the American version of the 308, while the 288 GTO looks much like the European version of the 308 QV.

The 288 GTO was made during the production run of the 308 (1984-86), and originally displayed on a European 308 GTB design exercise by Pininfarina shown at the 1977 Geneva Salon.

Aside from the obvious items which might be changed by a kit, all 288's are left-hand drive, the transmission casing is visible from the rear, the engine is not transversely mounted (it was the first longitudinally mounted Ferrari V8 engine), and the wheelbase had been extended by over 5" at the rear.

The 288 GTO's successor was the F40 (1987-92). Both cars have climbed past the half million dollar marks.

    LOL :D

Steven, your recently purchased 308 is a pearl! I am very glad that this car has come back to Europe with a very good owner.
I hope to see your 308 in the future. Must be a treat for the eyes! ;)

Wish you lots of fun with this car.

PS: did the car had reflectors while it was in the USA? If so, did they remove it well? (I don't see any marks of earlier placed reflectors)

Thanks John. It is actually the last year of the red being called Rosso Chiara. It is a bit darker and richer red. When sitting next to a corsa it really looks darker. Makes Rosso Scuderia look almost orange. Bob

Hey Folks, I have owned my 78 Euro Spec 308 GTS for about 10 years now. Bought it from the original owner on ebay no less. The car has been completely trouble free in the 50Km I have put on it – never broke down or left me stranded. When I bought the car it was pretty darn federalized and I always wanted to get er back to stock trim. So, after all these years and lots of lots of knuckle busting, I am just about there with where I want to be with the car. Things I have done to the car are:

Body: Strip and Respray of original lacquer paint, Deleted body side rear lights, added front side round euro marker lights, cut and installed vent in front bonnet, Euro fiberglass front bumper, custom fiberglass and aluminum rear bumper made by me, 16 inch superperformance wheels with hancooks, Berlinetta motor cars front spoiler with scoops to duct air to brakes, vittaloni California mirrors, tinted side and rear window.

Interior: New hides, everything else original even navy carpet. Pioneer cd player

Engine: borgo pistons, true dual exhaust, TWM throttle bodies, electromotive tec gt computer, electromotive direct fire ignition, additional air scoops to air box, SI clutch system – much easier on the leg

Suspension and brakes: new Konis, Porterfield brakes.

Things I would like to still do: Better sway bars to accommodate the 16 inch wheels, better oxygen sensor (wideband), incorporate a barometric pressure sensor in the feedback loop to computer for driveability due to air temp, pressure, altitude changes.

Or you could simply move out of the hills...and say it's done. :)

Great car. Pretty modernized though. I fell sorry that you'll never again have to file points along side of the road to get home, or wack the carbs to unstick a float. Bonding moments with your car. You know, the wonderful world of Enzo.

Thanks guys, yes, those bonding moments, fuel starvation, vapor lock, hot starts, stinky garage, fouled plugs, backfiring!. This is the only season that i have owned the car where i have not yanked off the velocity stacks and had to rejet - just plug in the laptop and throw numbers at it going down the road.....At least i did not sacrifice that glorious intake sound....
