The interview with him I read actually confirms your thoughts. However it also confirms my concern, that he simply has reached his life's dream and is now in it for the money. Time will tell.

Unfortunately I think this was Massa legitimate one time shot at a WDC based on the events from the year, at least the Massa sucks comments should decrease dramatically.

This was his best shot, but given the change in rules and the general unpredictabilty of racing luck no one knows.

    Andreas,

I am as much a Kimi fan as you... I did some thinking on this over the past season and I realized I was wrong to think the man lacks motivation. Read this account of Kimi's early career....

"His first race outside Finland was in Monaco when he was 15 years old. During the race, the steering wheel broke, but he continued, informing his mechanic by frantically waving the steering wheel in the air on the home straight. Räikkönen's next Monaco race was also memorable; he was thrown on the wrong side of the safety fence in a first lap collision, but continued driving until running out of road. Undeterred, he lifted his kart back on to the track and continued to race. His mechanic thought Räikkönen had retired, but he eventually caught up with the other competitors and finished third."

That is the Kimi I remember. He's still there and will be coming back in 09, trust me :)

I heard on ITV (from Martin Brundle) that Felipe did fewer driving errors than Lewis this season... Can anyone who is stat savvy confirm that?

    No, ferrari did.

They let massa go with an entire fuel system attached to his car. The people who made his conrods which failed because of not using the right mix of metals or whatever causing his engine to fail did. Massa made three big errors this year, Melbourne (disaster race with both ferrari's retiring in the end), malaysia (spin) and silverstone (massa trying to win disney on ice as it looked like).

But crucially on the closing stages of the season it was ferrari who messed it up, end of.

    They are equally to blame.

Ferrari made mistakes. Massa made mistakes. If either of those two parties hadn't made mistakes and Lewis and McLaren had (and the FIA had still meddled with the standings to keep Ferrari artificially close), then Massa would have won. You can't say that he would have won IF Ferrari hadn't done this or that, without also accepting that he also would have won IF he himself hadn't done this or that.

And if you start to play that game, then IMO you can't discount the FIA meddling in the season either. Which is why, in the end, all that really matters are the results as they stand. I don't think Massa has any cause to complain to his team anymore than his team has cause to complain to him. It takes a fast car, a good driver, and a good performance on track and in the pits in F1. Ferrari did well this year on those fronts, but not as good as McLaren.

Here's my vote for the Massa Sucks thread to die.
He completely outclassed Kimi this year.
Yes he made some mistakes, but so did everyone else and so did the team.
He also proved today what a truly class guy he is.
Today's race will be talked about for a long time to come.
With such drastic rule changes next year it'll be a whole new ball game.
One thing I can guarantee you is that I'll be back next year cheering just as hard for him - maybe even more so.
He will be champion some day.

I re-read this again and have to respectfully disagree!

We are talking about Ferrari here, right? I assume everyone on this board is a Ferrari supporter and although I am a fan of the old cars, Ferrari design and technology is second to none. Did you hear the quote today from Ron Dennis that MM spent 7,000,000 just to get the MM as competitive as they could for todays race and still Im not sure either LH or HK could have beat Massa's car. Or DC's statement that Masssa was the years most improved driver! Having faith only in Ferrari I know next years car will kick ass and that Felipe will again outshine his teammate and Ferrari will outshine the other teams..... Let there be no misunderstanding, Ferrari Rules even in defeat!!!

I must quote Conan here to make my point

Mongol General: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?
Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.
Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.

whatever happened, that was the saddest podium I have ever seen...!

Massa: great race, 1st place.. but lost the WDC
Alonso: 2-time WDC, great races this season, yet too little too late (and he still hates Renault)
Kimi: defending WDC, yet he fell short of expectations, and "let" Massa win today

Hamilton must be ecstatic, but he was there on the podium to show it.

Down below, Coulthard went out with a fizzle... he's had a horrible season, and had to bow out with whatever little dignity he had left... great guy, great driver though. :)

http://www.manipef1.com/season/2008/standings.php Check this link for some interesting stats. Felipe had the highest average grid position and led the most laps and had the most wins.
I guess it depends on how you define errors as far as LH vs Felipe. Felipe never took out 2 cars in one shot on pit row as the cars were stopped at the RED light :)

I think Ferrari made more errors pitwise than Mclaren. Felipe's victory total would be higher for sure if the engine doesnt fail in Budapest and he would have probably won Singapore. The team with the most victories was Ferrari, in spite of themselves.

    +100!

I think one of the main reasons why Massa was so emotional was due to him realizing that this was his one golden shot where all the stars were aligning for him this season. Personally, i think he was the second most luckiest driver on the grid...only slightly eclipsed by Hamilton. Kimi fought his car, his set up and his tires all season not including all his terrible luck and he still came in 3rd. Ferrari gets Kimi's car right next season and he'll have the WDC locked up with a few races still left. If Massa can continue to qualify well he'll still be up there in the top 4 next season which is good for the Ferrari WCC.

I never like Kimi till he came to the team(He was aligned with the dark side). I really started liking him but being an ex-band member I think his partying is costing him. It seems he wakes up in the middle of every race most time too late to win. This coincides nicely with my past hangover experiences. I also believe that Ferrari as a team will feel that they owe him something, maybe Im reaching but...... I would not be surprised to see him #1 on the team next year or at least with equal parity???

I just joined his fan club!

I liked Kimi since his McLaren days... I recognized his potential and part of me wanted him to beat Massa for some reason.

I've also been a Hamilton fan since he started with F1, and wanted him to get the WDC, but didn't expect McLaren to win WCC because of Kov.

Totally agree on the disappoinment on the podium today.
World Champion drivers do their best work in the rain, like Schui or Senna.

First time I've been back on the boards since my last blow out with someone calling for Kimi to hang it up. Good to see I've got a couple supporters who share my enthusiasm for him. I agree 100%. Next year, everyone had better watch out...

Reading those comments about Kimi being unmotivated and being so lacksidasical about whether he feels like racing or not this season have been entertaining to say the least. :D
