Jeremy Clarkson (UK Motoring Journalist / Broadcaster), once said: "Owning a Ferrari is like owning a bear...Everyone will say 'hey! that's cool', but one day, rest assured, it WILL pull your head off!"

To be honest, after falling in love with the 348 (I did try the 355 too, but the sheer hard work involved in driving the 348 appealed to me - You should see my forearms now)...I didn't think owning one would ever scare me. I came from an e39 M5 with all that torque (and dynamic stability control, admittedly) ...The 348 having a flat curve, I thought would never surprise me...I was wrong, very very wrong.

On Friday, I was on the power slightly too soon after leaving a roundabout. I thought 'what's that screaming noise'...I looked out of my window to see the back end catching up with me. What a car!!!! Even though this came as a surprise, NO! a shock, it was so easily corrected...Now, I'm no drifter or track legend...More of a lover than fighter if you get my meaning...But the car is so mechanically direct, it just did exactly what I thought it would...A bit more power and a bit of opposite lock and the problem was history...

Thankfully the couple in the Micra behind me thought I'd done it on purpose...They waved their approval as they passed me (now doing 30 mph in the 'slow lane' with a slight cold sweat)...I winked knowingly, then stopped at the next truck stop for a cigarette.

Just thought i'd share this with you

Great story Mark, thank you for sharing! :)

I have had mine sideways on a wet track with a driving instructor sitting next to me, its a nice experience in that environment, on the street it would be heart pumping. Might try it ;)

    Nice story mate! :):)

I have had my 348 sideways many many times! The lastest sideways action was last week actually.:eek:

The g/f Nicole and I came out of a round-about in the main street, when I gave it some juice and broke the ass end out it in very cool fashion! Nicole looked at me with a big cheesy grin and called me a lead foot!! :D:D

I dont do this at high speed and it is VERY controlled, trust me. ;);)

No Doubt lives sideways doesnt he? He drifts his 348 Spider! :p:p

I'm still waiting for video to confirm this urban legend. Doesn't Cindy McCain (soon to be 'almost First Lady') drift too?

I would challenge anyone to repeat this maneuver without getting the car off the pavement!
    SKILLZZZZ
If you own a 348 and have never had it sideways, you are missing much of the fun!

I've seen an interview in which Cindy McCain talked about her drifting hobby. Don't recall where, though. She's also a Private Pilot.

This was news to me until it happened on a residual street.

Was at my brother's house for his birthday, I was leaving in the evening and he walked me out to the car. I started it and had the engine running for a few minutes. As I was getting ready to leave, he said, I want to hear that puppy roar". So I headed down the street which had a slight decent that goes into a 90 degree left hand turn, thinking the engine is warm, I went into the turn a little hot, next thing I know I do a 360 in the middle of street with cars park in either side. Stupid me, I did not think of the fact the tires were still cold, and the big old axx end just kept coming around. There was white smoke from the tires everywhere, I could not see out the front window, my concern was trying to power out of the spin and hit any one of the parked cars or drive up the curve, as the street was less than 50 feet wide. When the car came to a stop, I was on the side of the street heading towards someone driveway.

I got myself out of there before the neighbors came out.

my 2 moments of car fun during my day is one round about I have in the way to work which I do with the tail out 90% of the time and then once at the business parking lot if I am the 1st to arrive and the cement is a bit wet (or else my tires will last 8 months) from previous rain I do one 360 at least or now that I have the hand of it a 720. What a start to the day...

Scared the crap out of myself in a lowly Mondial this way. I was taking a left out of a parking lot onto main street. There was a lot of traffic and I was waiting and waiting for a chance to get out. Finally there was a small break in the traffic and I gunned it with a little too much turn too soon and the rear end stepped out. It actually was quite controllable. I kept my foot in it (lifting would have been bad) and straightened it out. Of course the whole time, the rears are lit up and the car is sliding. Everyone thought I did it to be an ******, so I slunk quietly away, shrunk down into my seat hoping nobody recognized me!! ;) I overestimated the traction of summer tires on a cool fall day. I do this turn all the time and it has never broken loose--summer tires are not good in cold weather.

i tried to drive my 348 Spider sideways on a handling track in 1st and 2nd gear. it was easy, fun and under control, but i wont try that at high speed. so dont worry about driving sideways in roundabouts.
