I was caught about a year ago on I-10 going 85 in a 65. The policeman said "did you know you were going 85?" I said "you know that's not so bad". He laughed and said "you know, your right, especially in that car. I can't give a guy driving a Ferrari a ticket. I'll tell you what, if you will get on it as you leave, we'll call it even."
Wish I could remember his name.

Why?? Police officers are just as human as the next guy and he is never obligated to right a citation because of a traffic stop.

You are 100% correct!!! F-car owners do take it on the chin!!

case in point, last month i left a car show in Orange County. Light was red, i was the 3rd of 5 cars, the light turned green we all proceeded on our way...My V-1 gave me a Laser warning, my son asked what was that?? i told him someone in front of us is going to get a ticket, we rounded the corner (again 5 cars running same speed with proper distance in between) there was a Motorcycle officer holstering his laser detector. he pulled behind me, i told my son he got someone watch him as he goes by!!!

Well he never went by!! He got Me!! Go Figure!! Worst of all...on my ticket it said i was driving a 2000 yellow Lamborghini Gallardo!!! (i was driving my Yellow Ferrari Stradale!!) How he singled me out...well, you be the judge.

My own Ferrari was stolen just two weeks after I got it. The landlady's boy told me he had seen it removed with a tow truck.

It was recovered just across town and returned to me - after some hassles with DMV because I hadn't yet changed the title to my own name - with the ignition lock drilled out but no other damage.

I was lucky, but it goes to show that thefts with tow trucks and flatbeds DO happen.

mythbusters did an expo on beating speed cameras....and no the license plate frames do not hide your plate. neither do the sprays. (look at video on youtube)

as for being pulled over, you are driving a G.D. Ferrari...and if the officer has a hard-on for those who are speeding, or simply envious of you driving a car he will never obtain on a policemans salary, he may want to get up close and personal with your car. it is VERY boring doing traffic enforcement. pulling over a fcar is a achievement, because 99.9% of the traffic stops are everyday vehicles.

my advice is to turn on the cabin light, put your hands on your steering wheel with fingers pointed up, and do not move. reaching for your credentials in the glove only makes them more nervous.

many people here in my state carry firearms as well, so the extra precaution to enable their safety as well as yours will only help your case for why you were originally pulled over.

lastly, having served as a police officer, we typically know what whether we are writing a ticket or not before approaching the car. your attitude and demeanor tells us what to do next.

my advice? be brutally honest. "yes officer, i was speeding, i never get a chance to drive this car and i was simply enjoying the moment." he may side with you and ask you to watch your speed. if you are being a jerkoff, well expect the officer to treat you like one by acting like one himself...ie, verbal judo.

lastly, everyone speeds. you got caught. we all have our days.

Well let me just say that in the past year alone, I've been pulled over 3 times and certainely not proud of it but also feel I was targeted unjustly:

    1) 65 in a 55 minding my own business with flow of traffic - couldn't believe it when he handed me the ticket
    2) 45 in a 35 pulling in the right lane trying to avoid some jerk in an R8 trying to antice me to race; of course he didn't get pulled over when he sped off at the light since my car is red and his wasn't. His initial comments were that he had never seen the interior of one of these and wanted to check it out. After he wrote the ticket he specifically stated that he was envious I drove one of these at my age.
    3) 54 in a 35 in the canyons, now this one I deserved.

I have upmost respect for the police force but sometimes I really wonder if I'm just being pulled over for driving a red Ferrari.

I really don't think cops care what kinda car you drive. guy doesn't care if its an F car or a pinto. Why would he?

When I had my Evo, I remember all those punks crying about how cops pick on them because their car has a wing or because it this or that.... whatever. I got pulled over in mine in a hick town in the hills because I ran a red light (I mean really ran it... it was read for 30 seconds at least whenI went through it, I just didn't see it)... right in front of the cop. He pulled me over. I was scared, and mad at myself for being stupid but I just was real polite and told him the truth (I had just moved there that week, the interesection was really screwey and I was confused about where to stop).... he listened and agree that it as a pretty confusing intersection and told me to be more careful and pay attention when driving around there because it has a few other weird interesections... and let me go. He didn't care what I was driving.

Been pulled over in a couple diff porsches also... and also, no tickets.. one was at 3am , I had tailout out... he told me he just used that as an excuse to see if I was drunk... I was not, he was cool and pleased I was not drinking, let me go. Another was for weaving in traffic...I was going the speed limit, but not using my blinker passing people.... the guy made sure I was not drunk, gave me a little lecture about being more careful (I was 18 at the time... a LONG time ago) and let me go...

My experience is usually same as the OP on this thread... that the cops can be pretty reasonable. Yes, there are some real jerks out there, but that is true with any group... for every cop who is a jerk there are 5 more that are probably just average decent guys doing their job. In fact, one of the nicest cops I have dealt with was the last ticket I got (first in 20 years)... I got the ticket, I deserved it (speeding inthe mini van) but he was very polite and helpful .... I drove away mad at myself for speeding not at him for the ticket.

but seriously, I don't think most cops care either way what you are driving.

    Good post! +1

FWIW......remove the wind-screen section between the headrest, it totally obscures your ability to see who's behind you and see the blue/red detailed plastic atop the car or the shape of the headlights! You're not likely to pass a cop, so they generally come-up behind ya.

Around here we're lucky....many fundraisers & charity events are put-on & supported by the exotic car community. If you're not doing something really dangerous or exceeding the speed limit by a huge margin, it seems most law enforcement are generally inclined to give you a warning.

Sometimes dropping names/events helps...but other times it can go violently wrong. I had one guy go nuts as he told me "charity should be anonymous and you can keep your ****ing money if you think it buys you favors". I'm not sure, but I sense his wife left him for a guy who drove a Ferrari ;) Oddly enough, it ended with a warning.....

I agree about being honest with them. I have had two warnings in the last 6 months. Both while speeding in my M5.

    1) It was 2AM and I was driving on Hwy 1 in Northern Santa Barbara county between Guadalupe and Santa Maria. I went real slow thru Guadalupe heading South. Coming off the last stop sign the road is straight for a mile. I just take off and after a couple of miles the road curves up and over an overcrossing and then goes into a 2 mile straight. As I hit the big straight I look down and I am doing 120MPH and take off. Just towards the end of the straight I look back and see flashing lights. The thought of just taking off enters my mind but I decide to pull over and let him catch up. His first words are "How fast were you going". I told him when I am going that fast I do not look down. He then asks if I have been drinking? I told him I would not drive like that if I had been drinking. He then took all my paperwork and came back after a while and says " If you will tell me how fast you were really going I will let you go". I said I was doing 120 at the start of the straight and probably around 150 at the end of it. He thanked me for my honesty and handed me back everything and let me go. I was in shock. I thought he was going to write me up for at least 100MPH but he never got a reading on me.

    2) Just last month I was going North on Hwy 1 where it goes from Hwy 101 to Lompoc. It is a winding two lane and I was going to my son's football game that was just starting. I had been moving a long when I came down on a motorcycle doing around 60MPH. I was stuck behind him until there was a little place to pass before the next turn. I just dropped down to third and took off. Just as I passed him and was pulling back in a CHP came around the turn. I jammed my brakes as my Escort was sounding off. I looked down and see the needle just dropping down pass 90. As he goes by, I look in my rearview and see him pulling over to turn around. I just pulled over and had my license out the window as he walked up. He asked what the rush was? I told him my son's football game had just kicked off and I wanted to get there. He tells me the motorcycle was doing 60 and the speed limit is 55 and to please slow down and lets me go. Never even checked my license.

I must have pleased the speed gods this year

They generally want you to be intimidated and apologetic without being a wise ass... That is if they didn't go through too much trouble to catch you. If they had to pull a U-turn, follow you very far or you were revving and/or speeding like an idiot on the freeway, you're getting the ticket 9 times out of 10.

It's their power trip that needs to be massaged.

Yep you got all us lonely pathetic police officers. We have no lives and can only live everyday to "Massage our power trip personalities by stopping all the elite people who drive F-cars." We only get pleasure by intimidation and expecting everyone to bow down to us and apologize for their very existence. I am so tired of reading such juvenile rhetoric. The truth is everyone wants us to stop the silly kid who speeds through their neighborhood but if it's you who gets stopped then we are simply power trip LE. Grow up, stop crying, talk about people who need their ego's massaged. It is just so amazing everyday some silly person just can't deal with the fact they got caught doing something they shouldn't have. I am fully aware that some officers can be very difficult to deal with and I don't make excuses for them but for the love of the lord can't some of you atleast admit we simply do a job trying to keep people safe. The most offensive part is some of you tell stories of being warned without any citation and you still are offended and make statements ie( he acted like he lost his wife to a guy driving a Ferrari but amazingly he let me go with a warning). He should have written you just because you now find it necessary to make a silly, juvenile comment after he gave you a break. Anyway, let the fun begin, tell me not to be touchy, tell me stop overreacting, tell me how you have been wronged a thousand times by LE. I say to you growup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the highest respect for most officers of the law. They are hard working and put their lives at risk every day. In my 40yrs of driving and over 80 speeding tickets, I have only run into a couple of a**holes. Then again, when I am speeding, I make sure I am only endangering myself and not driving like a jerk weaving in and out of traffic.

I agree, which is exactly why when I get pulled over I act respectfully and apologetic. The last thing I do is start acting like some wise ass trying to BS his way out of a ticket after clearly breaking the law. I can only imagine what you must think of some guilty dude sitting in a sportscar dropping names and flashing business cards....

For the record, the ego comment was derived from conversations I have had with more than one officer who stated that, often times, when a driver (going 5-10> than the limit) sees them and respects them by immediately slowing down, they will get a pass.....

I am a military veteran and my insurance card says "LT GeorgeSSSS USN". When the police see this, I generally get let go or a very much reduced ticket. I'm always respectful and I never mention that I am a veteran -- -- usually the officer does. I remember one who looked at me and said, "Well, we're driving a little fast on my road today, aren't we lieutenant." He let me go with a warning.

Darth, it is not that I am blind to or ignore the fact that officers can be overboard and rude. Heck you just proved it because I can honestly say I have never in 16 years as a LE stopped anyone who was simply driving 10mph or less over the posted limit. Just the fact that I personally know officers who have and in fact cited the driver for such a minor infraction is to say the least embarrassing to me. I believe that is honestly almost harrassing someone because there is not a person on earth who has not exceeded the limit unintentionally by such a minor amount. With that said, I do become personally offended when somehow all LE gets thrown into a specific stereotype because of a few. I honestly don't want anyone to feel that they have to kiss my b__ over anything. Fortunately, I no longer work patrol and traffic enforcement is not part of my duties. I just know I never wrote a citation because someone didn't call me sir or let them go because they did. I gave warnings when the person was simply honest. That is the truth!! If they were honest and I really felt the driver would not do whatever he or she had done then I just gave the warning and walked away. There are way to many truly dangerous drivers out there to need to cite a 10 mph over or an honest mistake. I guess I should probably just be raising h___ with the officers who find ways to just p___ off the average citizen.
