strange question this time....I am about to take delivery of a rear glovebox from an airbag 355. I want to fit this in my non airbag 1995 355.......I know where it goes ...below the rear window and I know it is fixed with 3 screws in its base but can someone tell me if these are self tapping screws or do they screw into clips on the chassis of the car?...........will it be safe to drill 3 holes in my car to accept the screws or am I going to connect with the fuel tank?

The rear glove box is mounted on the rear shelf and under that shelf are electical and piping so you really want to be carefull installing self tapping screws.
The rear glove box was originally designed for convertibles and perhaps (some one know?) there are welded in screw holes on those cars???? but in the berlinetta you must drill.
I have the same glove box and am waiting till I do my major service this winter. At that time I will remove the fiberglass shield that covers the gas tank and peer in the void above the gas tank to make sure I do not drill in to anything that does not need ventilation holes.

I take my glove box in and out to accomodate a camera mount for track days. In my 1998 Berlinetta there are three threaded holes in the chasis. I am note sure but I beleive they are not clips but raised bits of the chasis which are threaded.

When i had my first 355 many years ago. I accidentally drilled a pissing hole into the top of my fuel tank through the rear deck.:D An expensive mistake:D

Ok, so 1998 cars have the threaded holes installed in the back deck for the glove box.
Its stand to reason that this glove box was a later model option then.
When I lifted my carpets on my 1995 berlinetta there were no such holes (brackets).......so be very carefull when drilling (you can always put a tube over the drill bit to ensure you can't drill more than a couple of mm deep).

p.s. if you want to wait till I do my major out service this winter I will look /advise what clearences there are under there.

I will remember to post because I have to install my glove box as well.
I will try to take a few photos as well (of the placement).....or perhaps take some measurements for reference.

The glove box fits and looks fine. Considering how little storage space we have in these cars it surprising this is not standard fitment across the board. If you look at the cars on ebay.......I have noticed that a lot of them have the box installed. If I can figure out how to post pictures here.....I will post a photo of the box in my car.

pictures would be great......................I believe all airbag 355's have the rear glovebox to make up for the fact that the front glovebox contains an airbag.....

thanks k wright...velcro it will be.......interesting.....if you have airbags and no rear glovebox then there is nowhere to put anything.......pen, cloth, Hill gate lock, condoms, rizlas, etc......

Yep, my jeans have pockets though ;) Also I keep a microfiber cloth and sunscreen in the pocket behind the drivers seat. I like to keep my cars clutter free, my last 355 had the glove box but I found the only things I kept in there I could do without anyway. No real issue :)

Chris in Canada..........you would do this just to show me?...............how nice of you............I look forward to seeing the photos............I believe the glovebox has a sloping back and the rear wall of a 1995 non airbag 355 has a straight profile ..........so am keen to see how it fits tightly......how are you going to secure it?........screws need a thread welded under the carpet and self tapping is a no hoper in that area............industrial velcro would do it....what do you think?

Heres a photo of the glove box in the car. The rear wall of the box fits the slope of the rear firewall.....there is no problem there. The box fits perfectly the ledge area.
Re attatchment? Well I am a little leery of velcro....it would work as long as you don't put any heavy items (although small) in there I suppose....but I track the car as well and with serious braking I would hate for this thing to come loose and fly forward into the windshield.
I will either tap (check underneat first) the firewall top or tig weld 3 little nuts on top there (there are 3 holes in the box base)......I won't know till I get into my engine out this winter.
I suppose another option would be to install a steel bracket under the carpet with a L brace (again under the carpet) up towards /behind the centre moulding trim where the challenge seatbelt hooks are installed......this would be structurally strong and would be the least invasive approach....mmmmmmm....now that I think about this I may go this route.

p.s. I may try to fabricate/weld up a bracket in the near future.....If I do I will post it here

I appreciate all the thought and suggestions on mounting this "purse" but isn't it a little excessive? What can you store in it anyway? There's side door pockets and seat back pockets.. As JMD-NZ said, my jeans have pockets too. One can always buy a nice leather pouch with compartments and stow it behind the seat or under or in the luggage compartment. Also, a visible glove box may even attract a break-in.
Yes, it's nice looking but not very practical IMHO.

I am revisiting this thread because I said I would provide pictures of an rear glove box install in a coupe without any current mounting holes. I am currently involved with an engine out (another thread) on my 355 and took the time to take a couple of photos of why one should not attempt just drill into the back deck and use tap screws. As you can see from the second photo there are a/c and brake lines on the left and coolant and wiring lines on the right .....exactly where the glove box would be mounted......and the screws fixed. I would not attempt to drill unless you removed the fuel tank first and very carefully drilled the mounting holes. I am not going to do this......I will fabricate a steel plate with welded nuts to be installed under the carpet insulation w/ 3m tape on the deck. Once I have fabricated the plate I will take and post photos of the install.
