OK...Winter is almost here. My car is thinking about settling down for the winters nap. You southern guys have no idea how jealous I am. Anyway...My gearbox is about ready for some work. The 3rd gear synchro is about done and I'm starting to hear some noises transmitted up the shift linkage. I know the flywheel needs grease and I might as well do the throwout bearing. Clutch feel fine otherwise but I should measure it up to see how much is left.

Anyone know where I can find a complete gearbox already to install in exchange for my core? I want to be ready. Disassembling mine scares the bejesus out of me. I fear I will have it down to parade rest and won't be able to find a part.

I have a '90 mondial t box with 23K miles on it - this has the lower ratio drop gears that were used by michelotto on the 348 they tuned (the Mondial t needed them to get the heavier weight to go faster on the 0-60), and I have a '93 348 box which had 19K miles on it.

Both have had bearings replaced 3 months ago, all the ringnuts tightened, drowned in loctite and pinged to FBB's spec, as well as the clutch shaft bearing, ringnut and gear checked, loctited and pinged.

I need one of the two for my car, and when I do the major over the x-mas vacation, I'll have one spare... So here's my go at it...

You can pick them up at my cost, I'll lie and whatever on customs documentation to minimize cost. The value of the boxes (without clutch/thrust bearing/starter are GBP 4200 each, but I'll put them into the brotherhood for 3700 picked up at my garage on a pallet.

I've been otherwise consumed and have not followed up on this. Marco has one but shipping could make it an issue. I need to figure those costs in. FMaderi is in position to overhaul my box here in CT. Parts availability could remain an issue. Mine is an SS which changes things slightly. 348 final drive ratio is the same but the SS has a taller 1st gear. I need to decide how important it is to keep the SS ratio. The problem with multiple choices is that they need to be contemplated an evaluated. Sometime I wish there was just one easy answer.

I'm not in a hurry so I'll keep thinking.

hi there, I had a problem with my 348 ts gear box ie it was buggered, I was able to swap my core for a rebuilt one through Jeff Ohland in Maine, he is excellent and the whole transaction all though took some time went relatively smooth considering my car is in New Zealand.
Have since traded the car for 355 though. Good luck getting it sorted, I just cringe every time I hear of another 348 gear box issue

    Update

Still can't located the aluminum source. All the gears look fine and the synchros are but broken, just worn. All appears OK so far. The mechnaic is a pro with this tranny and says its not uncommon to find remnants of original assembly in the screen. In addition, there was some aluminum lost when some previous owner cross threaded the dip plug then install a helicoil. Going to install a timesert now to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Have a good look inside the oil pump housing. If those are aluminum strips they could be from one of the shafts digging into the pump cover. Why would the main/lay shaft do this? Because of a bad bearing race. Have a VERY VERY good look and the condition of the bearings on the ends of your shafts, especially the ones located on the oil pump side of the gear box. The shafts should have absolutely no lateral movement to them.
