It only works on the crown of the head. No where else so if you are losing the front hairline, it is worthless if you want that back. I stopped using it in 91 when I had my first scalp reduction. Bottom line is this; if you are really losing your hair, the ONLY option you have is a transplant to recover what is gone and a daily dose of Propecia to keep all the rest. There is simply no other option except removing your attachments in total. I mean that's it. Period. Minoxidil WILL NOT regrow hair they way someone like myself want's it. It just will not do it.
Switched to Proscar and got a pill cutter. I was paying $72/month on Propecia, this way I'm paying $9.50/month.
Propecia does actually regrow hair in a lot of folks, but not all... it works for something like 90+% of guys, but more than half just stop loss and the rest see regrowth. For me, I was just starting to lose my hair a tiny tiny bit... like small recession about the size of a quarter at the corners of my front hairline. Around 16 months on Propecia and not only has the loss stopped, but it has grown back. Those areas before that were almost bald with just a few stray hairs.. now they are almost as densely populated with hairs as the center of my hairline. And despite the fact that my hair loss seemed to start and progress very quickly (it was literally in between 2 haircuts that I noticed it had gone back - and after the next gone it had gone back a LOT more), it has now come back forward. I haven't seen any side effects at all from the Propecia, except the $70/mo out of my wallet. Talked to my doc about Proscar and he was hesitant - said it was better to use Propecia because it's made for this and "using other drugs is never as safe". Whatever doc... anyway I am just being lazy about going to another doc to get a 'script for Proscar. Aaya, where did you get the pill cutter? Does it work well?
My partner does hair restoration surgery. Doing finesteride (Propecia, Proscar) is often key. Propecia is 1 mg, Proscar 5 mg, otherwise exactly the same drug (I apologize if this has been posted earlier, I did not read the entire thread). But what the good Dr. Cosgrove has said on this page is absolutely true. Things like massage may help a bit (I am of the opinion that shampoos do not work, and any effect seen is secondary to the massaging action that occurs when you shampoo). This assumes that you have no other process happening on your scalp. For example, if you have dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis), the low grade inflammation from that can cause mild hair loss. Treating it (Nizoral shampoo works) will restore that hair. But for testosterone related hair loss, it is topical minoxidil, oral finesteride, similar 5 alpha reductase inhibitors, and surgery.
