I would like to suggest Red Line Oil CV22 synthetic grease. It has been 7 years of trouble free operation! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Would anyone have a source (preferably in Europe) for the class 12.9 CV bolts 75mm x 10mm , and nuts ? Best source so far wants around 150 +shipping for the set ... I find that a bit expensive for 24 bolts !
YES, Gasoline, the cleaner of choice!!! Why buy anything else?? True Detroiters would never think of using anything else. 31yr's in Detroit, 34 just outside.
Yes Dave, great write-up. I wonder, could a flat blade screwdriver be jammed between the nut flat and the housing, instead of an open-end wrench, to stop the nut from rotating (definite olive shade tree mechanic trick)
Hi Dave and everyone who has contributed to this article so far . I am doing a typical CV joint / boot replacement with all the typical fun ......... in Australian sub-tropical heat , the opposite of freezing cold. I need to find a supplier of the nuts used to hold the CV's to the diff / axles. If somebody knows of any within Australia or anywhere in the world that has a web site it would be greatly appreciated. Paul , ( damn black grease isn't doing the laptop keyboard any good )
superperformance UK has them. i did the CV-joint job just two months ago. bought the bootsets and some nuts and bolt with them.
As st@ven has said they're available but you'd get them locally too. Ask in the aussie section and they'll give a qld source. I know of melb and syd outlets which would have them, but I'm sure you'll get them in your area.
I have a right hand drive 83 QV GTS and have had a pig of a time trying to remove the right hand side drive shaft. I have removed all the nuts bar one on the wheel side it all chewed up now and will need cutting off tomorrow! I am now looking at the transmission side of things and wondering whats the best angle to get at those buggers at, access is so limited! what if any thing do i need to pull off to get at them. and once there off how do i reassemble. HELP!
The trans side bolts are much easier to remove. Spray them first with penetrating oil and then use a long drive extension and a impact wrench, if you have it. I did it without an impact wrench and it only took about 5 minutes. Try to get a wrench on each bolt before you remove the nut since the bolt head will deform and start to spin (ask me how I know). The outside bolts were much tougher and I had to cut one off as well.
Hi Impactco, Did you work from under the car or through the side or through the engine cover, how did you get acces to the nuts? Did you have to pull anything off? My nearside which is your drivers side looks a lot easier to gain access but the side i need to rectify looks like the tough one. Thanks in advance Anthony I HATE RUSTY NUTS AND BOLTS!
I did the right side as well. I removed the wheel well liners and used a 3 foot extension which lets you access these from the side of the car.
Thanks for the great post. I just finished mine this weekend. The outboard allen bolts were not going to come out without stripping. I used a 15mm Craftsman Bolt-out set and they came right out. I highly recommend them. The CV joint had to be removed using a gear puller. Other than that, just a very messy job.
Incidentally, another option is that there are CV bolts of sufficient grade available through McMaster Carr which have a drilled head for wiring. Between lock nuts (either the original ferrari nuts) and wiring the bolt heads you're sure to have a bullet proof installation.
May be off topic - but very close in location. -- i have a oil leak at the differential seal. anyone replace this oil seal? whats involved? (78 308 gts driver side)
I pulled the axle out of my 87 3.2 Mondial. I got the clips off the ends of the axles no problem but can't get the joint off the axle to reinstall the boots. This thread makes it sound like this should have been easy or to give it a tap with a rubber mallet. I've done that and even went so far as to use a shaft to hammer directly on the back side of the solid part of the bearing that goes directly against the axle. Thanks in advance!
This question has been asked before in another thread by someone else. But, since this seems to be the definitive thread on this subject I will post my query here. I have a 1985 308 and one of the CV boots has failed. I read all the posts in many threads that indicated the Porsche part would fit. They were available locally but when I went to pick them up they did not match the old part and they would not have fit well on my CV joint. The kit was quite complete, but the boots in this kit are not flat on the inside where they match up to the cv joint flange, the boots have a half round rubber ridge that goes into a matching groove on the joint flange. Its probably a better design but it makes the CV Boot incompatible with my CV Joint. See the pictures below to see what I am talking about. Does anyone give me a lead on a part that matches better. I think the boots that Dennis McCann sells will fit and they seem to be very reasonably priced, but I would prefer to find the parts locally so I can work on it this weekend. I just finished this project on my '79 GTS. You need the boots, CV's, from the 930, NOT the 911. The boots you show in the picture appear to be out of a box listing the 928 and 924. The 930 CV's and boots are different than the 911's.
So here is a picture of what I found. It shows both the flat inner surface and if you look closely the GKN part number (901 332 293 12). Other part numbers and (manufacturers) that I ran across in my search which I cannot confirm actually fit but were referenced as cross referenced to the GKN part are listed below in case anyone finds the information useful. K6020-22418 (GKN alternate number ??) W0133-1639803 (GKN alternate number ??) 94796 (CRP) 42343003589 (IMC) Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well that part (901 332 293 12) will not work either, it is too small so I purchased the boots from Dennis McCann and they are perfect as expected. Next problem - One of the joints is pitted so it needs to be fixed or replaced. I can't seem to find anyone that still fixes CV joints. Any suggestions? Should I just buy a new one? After all the trouble I had trying to find a compatible boot I don't hold out much hope finding a suitable replacement for the CV joint locally.
